Default What would cause my car to run rich?

My car has been running kinda rich as of the last couple months,I dont have a cat so I can smell the gas in the exhaust.....or coming out of the emissions I should say.Ive check my plugs and they all look really good,so I decided to pull the valve cover and it kinda smelled like gas in there? Not horrible but noticeable.Could it be the hollowed out cat?

Any ideas on what would make my car run so rich?I have also noticed about a 3-7 mpg difference in milage. Thanks for the insight.

O2 sensor, TPS too maybe? (mine smelled bad with the TPS code on, smells better now w/ just O2 code) try resetting ur ECU too. cheap ez fixes first ^^

The HEAT is the killer in my area......When it gets hot I have to lean my VAFC out another 8-10% to get it to start. High heat causes less efficient fuel atomization.

I would run a bottle of fuel system cleaner through it, replace the spark plugs, and lastly do a compression check, it shouldn't smell like gas under the VC, that would be blowby letting gas into the oil, and that would be no good.

Well I just ran a bottle of seafoam through it.....I dont know if it helped or not(with milage that is),also I did a compression test like 2 weeks ago and all was fine,Ill get new plugs tommorrow at kragen or the autozone, thanks for the replies , but does any have any other ideas?

Could the 02 be the problem...im also getting a new cat this week,so Ill see if that helps, because honestly I never had a problem with it untill I hollowed out my rattling catalytic converter. Thanks again.

I'm having the same problem but no gas smell, Ive changed everything tune up wise and still runs rich. I'm spitting a lot of black soot when I get on it. So far I have changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor, o2 sensor, coolant temp sensor, and used Lucas and Seafoam. I'm going to start leaning towards the EGR valve or fuel pressure regulator. But concerning the smell of gas under the VC have you changed your PCV valve??

Nope,I havent changed my pcv,but since I changed out my valve cover seals(unrelated),I havent smelled any gas in the valve cover.Actually the new spark plugs seem to make a big difference so far.And its wierd because I am getting descent millage through out the whole deal, just running a lil rich.

Like I said Im waiting on the cat right now,and when I get it its going straight to the shop with my dc downpipe for some welding and what not,so Ill see if that helps.Like I said before,I really had no problem with this untill I hollowed out my stock cat.

took mine to a smog place.. did not pass because of hollowed out cat.
when i got hom threw cel p0172. too rich.. changed cat now its fine.
check helms. it can also be fuel pressure is too low or too high.
tps, primary o2 sensor went bad.
my problem was the hollowed cat and fuel pressure too high..
