I know this probably wont help that much, but I don't know what you have found out so far but i know if you go to http://www.slhondaparts.com you can find diagrams for what goes where. Helped me out when i swapped IM.
Another thing I did, if you don't have friends with a 92 si to look at, is go on ebay and look at the 92-95 civics that are for sell. Most of the time there is some close up pics of the engine bay that might help you get a good idea.
I don't think you will need to remove the dash to put the evaporator in I think you'll just have to remove the glove box, but someone will correct me if I am wrong.
Sorry if I didn't help good luck

92 SI was r-12. You wont find that anywhere anymore, unless you find a mechanic who has stashed some away. But be prepared to pay a lot for it. Converting it to r-134 is your option but I feel it doesnt cool as well.
The earliest available installation instructions is for 1995 (maybe the same though):

Autozone and Advance both sell R-12 to people who are licensed to buy it.

When I did mine for my 95 si, I had to piece the system together...went to the junk, ebay, and dealer. Still doesn't work till this day. I might have to take it in, but I think its the canister looking thing that messed up...I'm using a used one. Was told to buy a new one. Oh well, here's a link to help you...page 3. Hope you get it fixed, cause I'm sure you can handle the heat, but your son....
