1999 Prelude engine block Non SH
I took my car to the mechanic and the engine block walls were scratched, most of the other parts are in good condition but I need to either fix of replace. Can anyone help as to where I can find a block??
I was under the impression that since its aluminum that was not an option. Do you know more less what it would cost to have it sleeved??
pm camp1320 about sleeving he can give you all the information you need on sleeving, and is it going to be used for racing or daily driving...need more information about your situation to give you advice on wether or not to sleeve it

The blind leading the blind......
Just find a US or JDM shortblock....should run you $600-$700. The other option would be to have the cylinders matched to over sized pistons.
Its a great idea NOT to listen to 06/07 replies.......

Just have the block honed and use oversize pistons, that would be the cheapest option.

sorry i wasnt a member back in 02 but i guess that makes me more incorrect about MY advice as far as sleeving...

usually....yes. Why spend 1000 dollars to get it sleeved when you can hone the block and fix everything for much much cheaper?

So you would just slap all that stuff into a motor without working it?

first off i wasnt telling him to sleeve the block...i asked what his situation was...implying wether or not he was wantin to build something for boost, all-motor, or daily driver....if he wanted it to be a daily driver then yeah just hone the block but if he is wanting to make power then he should sleeve it, just cuz my membership started in 07 doesnt mean that i dont know what the hell im talkin about

It really depends; I'm just saying that is a potential solution. I've seen low mileage F23 blocks for as little as $50, and for what this guy wants maybe it would work fine to "slap" that block in. He'd have more displacement and lower compression, so maybe more torque and ability to run cheap gas? Anyway, the point is that now he's heard of both a low budget DIY solution and an expensive "take it to my mechanic" solution.

Credit to you for offering help but maybe elaborate a little more.....
If a Honda Tech joined today and knows what hes doing then he knows what hes doing....if he doesn't then he doesn't. Having working in the Industry for 10yrs, 4@Acura......I wouldn't say being a Honda Tech is a guarantee that someone knows the same or more than someone here. Spending days doing warranty work on newer Hondas doesn't make you a genius. In my day I have met some REAL Techs and more phony ones that I can remember. Guys that can rip motors apart in their sleep and guys that are clueless......
As you can see I know what Im talking about in a logical sense......
I didn't say 100% of 06/07's I said 99%. considering the amount of 06/07's that are on the boards, I'd say theres still quite a bit of room out there for some real knowledgable people.

To the OP of this topic.
You have a 99 prelude base model right? you will need to find a block from a 98-01 in order to pass emissions. you CAN NOT put an F22 or F23 block in there. I notice you are in Cali so this plays a big part. You can put a JDM H22 bottom end in there no problem, you just have to have your mechanic hook up the smog equipment etc for the 99 model. Another thing to think about is that im assuming youre running a stock ECU....i wouldnt reccomend putting a JDM bottom end in there without at least piggy backing a VAFC to do a lil fuel adjustment with higher compression you will need more fuel.
where is Calexico, Ca? let me know and i can see if i can point you a better direction.

Have people had success running OBD2 with a JDM block? The one person I remember doing it back in the day had a nightmare of a time with it. I just assumed the Higher Compression and OBD2 didn't work well together.
Are 5th gen JDM motors 10.6:1? I guess if they are and run the same ECU(which I doubt) OBD2+10.6:1 would work fine. Maybe the use of a JDM 5th gen ECU or TypeS ECU would do the trick? I don't know.....thinking out loud.....

great question. i have been wondering this too, having to deal with GA emissions. i just brought this up in the "last resort" thread on the first page. what exactly is the difference between, say, the base JDM OBD2 and base US OBD2? if you have all the emission stuff from the OBD2, would a 5th gen base JDM engine/ecu be a straight swap?

I am clueless with OBD2 engines.......for what its worth I passed IL OBD1 emissions with a JDM H22A/s2s1 cams/spiked ecu.

US OBD2 is still 10:1 or technically 10.2:1 or something...so no the Stock US ECU wont provide enuff fuel for the higher compression JDM version. thats why i was saying that you need to add at least a VAFC to add it OR get a JDM ECU since most smog techs outside cali dont know the difference.

91preyludesi what experience are you speaking from? Have you swapped a JDM OBD2 engine into a lude and failed emissions?

Not to be an ***, but I have seen this topic come and go and have yet to find an answer I trust... without dropping 3000 (give or take) and finding out myself. So for the sake of this site being less drama and more Honda who is right? Seriously, no offense. My wife tells me I am too blunt.. but a definative answer would rock FTMFW or something
