Default D16y8 problems: overheating, bogging out, etc.

i just finished putting a stock d16y8 in my 98 civic (had a b-series but took it out to rebuild it so i put a d16y8).

it's not the one i originally had in the car, i bought it from someone.

i turned the engine on and drove it around the block once yesterday and let it sit then refilled the coolant back to the top.

then i took it out again today and drove a little further (3 blocks) and it kept bogging out so i drove it back home and by the time i got home the temp. gauge was reading pretty hot and the engine was smoking a little. the closer more overheated it got, the more it would bog out. also when i accelerated in gear i heard a rattling but when i was rolling in neutral the rattling went away.

2nd gear grinds really bad, the rattling might have something to do with that.

but i got home and checked the coolant level and it hadn't gone down any, still at MAX. so i don't know what the problem is. obviously the engine isn't getting coolant somehow.

oh and the radiator cap was hissing when i popped the hood.

any help or ideas? it's running stock harness, stock ecu. only CEL is for secondary O2 sensor but that wouldn't be the problem.

water pump possibly?

also, the upper radiator hose was really hot and the lower one wasn't hot at all.

could it be air bubbles in the coolant? would that cause it to bog down that much?

bump, the coolant level went down overnight. i looked in my manual for how to bleed the coolant but it says there's only a bleed valve on integra models.

ok, i just tried running the car at idle for like 10 minutes and the fan never came on. the top of the radiator started smoking and then the car started overheating so i turned it off.

so no, my fan's not coming on. i checked the two fuses in the engine bay for the radiator/cooling fans and they were good.

the fan worked fine with the b-series motor in there 6 months ago so i don't know why it randomly wouldn't work.

any ideas?

If the fan isn't turning on and the top hose is hot and the bottom isn't, your thermostat is bad. I just replaced mine last week, it was doing the same thing. I got a 180 degree thermo and some coolant for like $20 at Advance and it only takes an hour or so to do, easy fix

really?

could a bad coolant temp sensor also be causing the problem?

ok fixed the overheating problem.

it still bogs out tho. i have a question - could a bad tranny ever cause the engine to bog down? i don't know what it is. switched out the plugs and it didn't help it. timing sounds right but i'll check that.
