Default square motor

I heard something about this from an old timer. We were BSing about car and he started talking about square motors where the stroke=bore. I was wondering if anyone has done this with hondas and what the bennefits would be.

The B17A is practically a square engine.

This link has some B-series bores and strokes.

so i'm pretty new to engine tuning, i'm trying to read up as much as possible. From a reliablitly point of view i'm thinking it would be better to increase the bore rather than the stroke for the maximum hp/reliablity gain. i'm going to work on the b18c1. Is this thinking correct?

depends what your power goal is, how much money you have to spend etc. plenty of reliable 200+whp motors have been built on stock sleeves and bore/stroke

looking for 200-250whp. i would like to see a good torque gain also. I would like to try to flatten out the power curve and get more acceleration but not to much more top speed. I know this can be done with a 16a tranny. but i want a built motor also. And it's old so i would like to clean everything up, that why i was thinking bore and hone with jdm type r pistons. stage 1 skunk cams and a few other things along with a good tune.

for that power goal, consider an 85x87.2/89 setup

not really. just depends on your power goals and budget. you can safely overbore to 82mm on stock sleeves. but that's pushing it a little. stock is 81mm.

there's no replacement for displacement, and that certainly holds true for our little 4 bangers.

so going larger than 1mm overbore would require extensive work and machining

havent done it personally but it's in my long term plans. expect a good sleeve job from any of the top company's out there to run you at least $900.

just a few for you to look at

so if i went with a .5mm overbore just to clean up the stock sleeve, type r pistons ballance crank. then did some work on the head. Port polish, valves, springs, cams. i would be getting close to 9 on the tach and around 200 hp?

yes essentially you would. here is an example, this is my old set-up

GSR motor
82x87.2
CTR pistons
CTR crank pulley
Blox HSL cams
Blox intake manifold
pro fab header
tuned on hondata s200
AEM ITR cold air

netted me 225/155

so yes you are on the right track, now just spend time researching parts and what would work best for you
