D16Z6 What to Do
I am swapping a D16Z6 SOHC VTEC motor into my 88 HF, I have just about everything I need for the swap except my new clutch...
I was planning on going the FI route because I've always wanted a turbo car, just love the way they sound and the extra power is very nice....but lately I have been considering going NA.
I basically can get any cam that JG makes for very very cheap as my Father is good friends with the guy who actually grinds their cams, and I could probably get some decent prices on some of their other products through this connection...
Which way would you go? The thing swaying me from the turbo route is one, the cost and two, the tuning (ya I know NA requires tuning too)...the reason I ask is because I hate to go cheap with turbo and then end up wanting to upgrade in the future and having to buy it all over again, but I'm not the type that can sit there and save up oogles of money without spending it on something else related to the car (who spends money on things other than their car? not me
)....whereas on the NA side of things, when you want to go faster, you just do more, instead of totally replacing things....
I guess my real question is how much can I get out of the Z6 NA, as I would almost rather go this route and just get a factory turbo car further down the road to satisfy my craving for boost (WRX STi, yummmy). The D16Z6 in an 88HF is already going to be decently quick, but what all can/should be done to the motor to go with a decent NA setup (I don't need to be the fastest around, just quick enough), like I said before custom cams are pretty easy and cheap for me to come by, along with possibly some other things (intake manifolds, throttle bodies etc)....
anyways, I know it's a long post, but if anyone can sift through all the crap and give me some advice I would appreciate it...thanks

you must boost the pressure, its the only way. also, use the d16z6 flywheel and pressureplate with an 88 accord clutch disk.

fine fine fine....I guess I'll have to go turbo...arg...mo money mo money mo money....oh well...its worth it
...I had another question for you d16z6 swappers....does it matter if the engine I have came out of an automatic or a manual car? my ecu is from a manual tranny car and everything, just the engine is from an automatic....is there anything special I will need to bolt the SI tranny/clutch up to the z6 since it was an auto? Thanks...
How fast do you want to go? You could throw some boltons onto that motor and have a good running car. Are you trying to chase down Z28 Camaros or something?
well...I just want to be able to have fun...and be able to beat some decent cars every now and then....I come from a 68 Chevelle then to a V6 Accord (a factory freakishly fast AV6)...and now I also own the HF...I mean, the d16z6 in the rex is going to be amazing coming from the HF motor it has now...and it will be right up there with my Accord, a little faster even, and probably along the lines of my chevelle....but you know how it goes, you never get enough, you always want to go faster....if I went turbo I would just go with the greddy kit w/o intercooler and run the stock boost....but I also am probably going to want to upgrade in the future (unless I'm tired of the car by then...ya right), and from my research although the greddy kit is good, its not really meant for high HP apps, and I would be better off with a Drag, Revhard or even custom....I don't like the idea of custom unless I had a shop do it because there is just so many little things you have to get and piece together. If I went NA then I'd just start off slow, intake, header, exhaust etc and just keep moving up from there...where if I decide to go the turbo route I would be wasting my money buying an intake, then header etc (I would still need exhaust, but it would be a different diameter for boost and non boost)....I guess I'm just anxious to go fast....maybe when I finally get the engine swapped in I will have enough to satisfy my cravings and give me enough time to save up for turbo (it sucks, I was going to swap last weekend, but I just crashed my accord and have been having to drive the rex daily as the chevelle is also out of commission)....
