Power Steering question
I was wondering if you knew of a way to decrease the power assist on the F22b1. I have an idea with altering the flow control valve, but other than that I have no clue. I got really worked up about this after driving my car without assist, when I had the belt slip off. It felt great, but working it around town was a chore and I think some assist would still give the great steering feel. Just post any ideas you may have.
i have been driving w/o the belt for the last 6-7 months. i love it, for some people( like skinny lil guys
) its hard and they dont like it. i dont have any problem turning the car, or even parking. ive gotten used to it and i dont think ill ever put it back on. i autocross too, so you know im having to turn sharp and quick.
the steering just feels a whole lot more "solid" to me. with the p/s it kinda feels like the steering floats. and i dont like how the steering wheel would whip back around coming out of corners.
no p/s combined w/ a home depot intake took .3 off my 1320 time. you can definatly feel the rpm climb faster.
no p/s =

I'm no skinny guy (190lbs), but I still felt it was no fun with the power steering belt off. Also, dont cut the belt, you may want it back...
yeah, dont cut it! its just two bolts on the side of the pump, then the one adjuster wing nut to loosen it up and you pull the belt off.
vtec2k2: i was pretty much annoyed with it at first, i suggest you give it a month or so. you will get used to it. your arms get stronger too. the lil skinny guy thing wasnt directed at you by the way.

i agree it does feel more solid
by the way you also gain some horses on top end. the more circular traveling objects of an engine that you remove is something like 7hp? i forgot, sorry if i didnt make sense

youd have to get a special belt if you removed the ac because that runs off the crank pully. believe me, we've already tried it. and i know what you mean about hot... im not ever givin up my ac here in AZ. are you kidding me? heh
Hey EXaccord, did you pump out all the P/S fluid as well? Because it was damn annoying when I took the belt off, and left the fluid in there. But I heard that after you pump out the fluid it feels pretty much like a regular non-powered rack. I've driven cars with no power steering and they feel decent, but with just the belt removed on mine and the fluid still in there it was a pain in the ***.

larger pulley...taht way the pump is underdriven and produces lower pressure...thus less power assist.
I hear you really need to keep the rack full of fluid. Even if you tear out the entire P/S system, you gotta fill the rack with fluid and plug-off the lines. I think the fluid is the lubricant for the rack and pinion and it'll grind itself up if left dry. Bottom line: DO NOT RUN A DRY RACK!

... I think this because I too have run without the P/S belt, and it seems that the P/S pump pulley just spins freely without any resistance?
-exaccord:are those Kosei's I see on your car?

That 0.3 might all be from the CAI. In my experience, the P/S pump draws almost zero power from the engine when you're not steering. It only bogs down the motor when you steer... and there isn't much of that in the 1320!

I removed the belt. I hate parking lots, but I love the twisties. I am going to find out more about the fluid lubricating the rack because I have never heard of this. SCC actually recommended draining the fluid, and I believe that will make a big difference. I'll take a look in the Helms when I get home.
I removed my PS belt and gained 22.6 HP at the wheels...J/K
I have run with it on and off and only seen a few hundreths to a tenth of a seccond difference at the track. I do however have the AEM pulles on the car. Right now the belt is off, cause theres this really hot chick I am trying to get "buff" for... I personally say tight parking lots suck without PS, but no big deal anywhere else.

Driving down one roadin particular, I found that I can go 60-70 instead of 55-60, it is very twisty and the lack of assist give me much more ffedback as to what ig going on.

Dont you realize that a car's ability is limited most by how much confidence he has in its abilities. Before I felt pretty sure except when it came to a few roads where I knew I had enough grip but couldn't tell what the car was going to do. Now I can correct its attitude midcorner much more easily and on the limit handling is much more predictable. Grip is not everything.
I just had a thought for those wanting to get rid of your power steeing. Summit offers a lightweight aluminum "Ford Pinto" (yes, I know... God forbid I say Ford or Pinto.) style of rack and pinion that weighs under 9lbs. I have seen this placed in many different cars and I am considering adding it to my Accord. I have looked at the unit and it looks very doable.

I've always considered changing the steering ratio gear as well. There's a little discussion going on in the RRAX forum: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=202485
update: well, after getting first last event, some people "warned" me that no modifications can be made to any belts or pullys for SP classes... sooo, i had to put my belt back on, and i now have to get used to driving with my pinky again.
