Default tranny issues?

so my car is acting up really weird. its an 89 accord, 5spd w/ 250k miles, lol. so the thing is, when I put into 1st gear, or any gear when taking off from a stop, it throws it back to neutral. Until yesterday it wasnt as serious of problem since it would happen only a few times, but now it wont engage at all.

so my question is, does this sound as a tranny or clutch issue? I replaced the clutch probably 6 months ago. tranny fluid is 1 year old, im running Lucas transmission Fix fluid, and the recommended oil grade.

thanks for any input.

I'm not familiar with this gen of accord... Is this a manual or hydraulic clutch system? If its hydraulic I suspect you have a leak on either the master or slave cylinder that's keeping the clutch from disengaging so you can put in it gear. Then again I could be wrong...I've never had a tranny kick out of gear.

But to answer your question, i think its a tranny question. But don't worry, I wouldn't tear it apart just yet...lets try to locate whether its actually letting you put it in gear.

Speaking of...with the engine off can you shift into each gear smoothly?

If its popping outta gear then your syncro's are shot. Id reccomend buying an h22 tranny if your looking for better acceleration.

yea, I definitely love the h22 tranny in my lude. But i dont know if I want to spend this kind of money into my beater. I do want to fix it, though. My budget is kinda tight right now, Im looking to spend as less as possible.

Hope you didn't use Gear Oil Should be Honda MTF or something close to it. Gear Oil will burn up a Honda transmission in a short period of time.

I call BS on that one! That's what a Honda ASE certified mechanic told me to use and I've had absolutely no problems. Castrol synthetic 5w30

For starters...if you have what looks like two brake fluid reservoirs next to each other you have a hydraulic clutch. There will be a caliper looking thing pushing the fork on your transmission attached to a hydraulic line. Look for fluid leaking at the firewall under the master cylinder as well as on the slave cylinder at the tranny and lastly way up and under the clutch pedal.

ok so here's an update:
so everytime i put it into gear, any gear, the car does nothing. all i can hear is a soft noise coming from the transmission, kind of like a grinding sound, and the mph and rpm needles act as if the car was moving.

the shifter goes into every gear whether the car is on or off, no problems with that.

I can even throw it into any gear while the car is on without depressing the clutch pedal. nothing happens, the car wont even stall.

I checked for the clutch reservoir and there's only one. so I guess this is a manual clutch system? - Also, no leaks were found.

Unless I'm missing something sounds like you be screwed! Even if you had a clutch problem it wouldn't let you move the shifter into gear...

I suggest the junkyards! As old as that thing is you should have no problem finding a used tranny. My guess is you can get one with a short warranty for under $100. And unless your seals are leaking really badly you should be able to swap over your new clutch/pressure plate.

Go kick yourself in the nuts asshat, 5W30 castrol isnt gear oil, its engine oil. I dont think you know your fluids. Gear oil is usuially either 80W90 or 75W90.

To the OP. IF you suspect that your syncro's are gone, drain the gear oil and inspect the old fluid for brass shavings. If you see BRASS shaving, then its a sure sign of bad syncros.

2 times in a row you give horrible advise. Why would you change a part if you dont know whats wrong with it in the first place? First, determine that it is inface the transmission, and then find out why the transmission broke. i've worked on cars and trucks with 4-500000km on an original trans that still shifts like butter.

Thank you....you beat me to it If that's what an ASE "Honda" tech told you...someone should rip the patches off his shirt and give them to someone more qualified because he obviously doesn't know a thing or two about Honda/Acuras. But, heck...what do I know...I am no transmission specialist??
