oil filter changing question.
ok so ive had the teg a cupple months, i changed the oil locally when i first got it, but this time im changing it myself. now my question is... how do you get the damn oil filter off? its in such an alkward place. on its side and all...
ive got a honda filter and a wrench to fit it but the place i took it to used a different filter of a differnt size. and i just cant get it off wtih my hand at that angle while on the floor
need some help soon. gotta work tomorrow and my car has no oil in it, id rather not fill it up without changing the filter.

You can try using sand paper it get more grip or get an adjustable filter wrench or if you are really cheap, stab it with a screwdriver to get more leverage out of it (it's pretty messy).
What I usually do when all else fails, is jam a screwdriver into the filter, and turn it with the added leverage from that. It's risky though, because if you still don't get it off, you're stuck with no filter either.
screwdriver should work just fine, thanks everyone. and i cant go out and get a wrench because my cars kinda not drivable right now. but yeah, ill try sandpaper > screwdriver in that order.

ok first thing to do to avoid this problem is to put a little oil on the filter so when you change it next time it comes off easy because it was oiled but if not get big pliers and turn it comes off easy PUT OIL ON RING SEAL NEXT TIME

Reach at filter from under car. Dont try and jam ur hand in between the intake manifold and the firewall.
To get the best grip on the filter, grip it between ur thumb and pointer finger (the one next to the thumb). You dont get as much grip on it if you try and put all 5 fingers on it...aka dont cover the part of the filter that is closest to the firewall. Ur hand should grip the sides of the filter.
Just trying to give you a few pointers since you dont have the correct tools.

when this happened to me (dealer oil change- worst idea ever) i went at it from under the car and used like a leather winter glove thing. kinda beat up but still has good grip. squeezed as hard as i could and muscled it off. it sucks when such simple things take so much effort.
You can get one of these http://www.jcwhitney.com/webap...10101 . They have them at Walmart or auto stores for like couple bux too...

I did exactly that last weekend. I had the OEM filter wrench, but now all the filters are smaller... and I don't feel like buying another wrench.

i was able to get it off by just grabbing it wtih some sandpaper. the problem was because my hands and the filter were so oily i just couldnt get a grip on it. and i have a wrench that will fit the little filters honda has but there was a different brand on it before and i didnt want to have a wrench i didnt need.
also it'd be real hard to get a pair of pliers in there.

OMG dude people just always oil up the ring on the oil filter and it will always come off with little or no effort why is this such a big deal its changing an oil filter god ive been doing engine swaps since i was 14 and you cant change oil filters yo admins delete this thread
^^^ seriously. If i'm stabbing at an oil filter with a screwdriver, i would be asking myself what i'm doing under the car. Make sure you have all the tools to finsh a job before you start if it's a daily driver. Especially before you drain the oil.

Uhh...everyone starts at some point buddy?
Just cuz you've been "swapping engines" since you were 14 it doesn't mean that everyone can do all of their own maintenance.
And he did mention that someone else did the oil change for him earlier...so perhaps they didn't oil up the gasket or put it on super tight.
Just get under the car and use sandpaper. The OF position is awkward as hell but you can get it with a little force. Keep tryin' it, but be prepared to have oil drip down your arm haha.
Remember to oil up the rubber gasket on the OF before you put it on, and use some of your new oil to flush out the old oil in your motor before you add in all the new oil...
GOOD LUCK!

The first time I changed my filter after buying my car, I had to jab it with a screwdriver.
I always apply oil to the filter gasket, tighten the filter by hand about 3/4 turn after the gasket seats, and I always keep a piece of 60-grit sand paper handy to get the filter off at the next oil change. No problem at all.

this always seems to work......the last time I couldnt get it off, I put a couple thick rubber bands around the oil filter, then reached up from under the car and just gave it my all. Kinda tore up my hand a little but it came off.
