looking into moving to the triangle, nc
yup, thinking of leaving the ol' NY and trying a new place out. Being that the ITR are a nice and paranoid bunch I wanted to see what you guys thought about the area? what city/towns should I look at, what areas should I stay away from? How is the city overall? worth living there? seems like a great place to live. cheap housing, col, no crazy NE winters and a bunch of colleges within a 20 mins driving distance.
I plan on coming down there with the gf for a week to check it out.

Just kidding
Are y'all looking to rent or buy? Currently the best housing deals are in SE Wake County, and just across the line in Johnston County. All depends on what you're after, of course.

I grew up in Watertown, NY (hour north of Syracuse)... Lived in NC (an hour below the triangle though)... Moved back to NY, made it for a month before I had to come back, and the area I live in is much ******* than the Triangle area... Cary, NC just got voted one of the best places to live if I'm not mistaken.

triangle area is a little better
triad area isnt as bad
i would suggest triangle or triad personally

N. Durham, doesn't look like a bad area. Durham has a reputation of high crime, but obviously it depends on where you are. Looks like a decent pad
I wouldn't consider CLT unless I were a fresh college graduate looking for tail. It has gotten too big. RDU isn't far behind, but you can still drive under 30 miles in any direction and see cows.
I grew up in the Triad, Winston-Salem would be a great place for a family, but there's not much going on. Property values are going insane, too.

My wife and I would have a pretty hard time leaving Greensboro (triad, just east of Winston Salem). It's busy enough, but not nearly as hectic as Raleigh/Charlotte.
We moved here from Central Florida/Orlando area. Nobody could pay me to move back. That area has blown up in the past 7/8 years. (No offense to my sunshine state buddies
)

The southpoint area in southwest Durham is a nice area and is rapidly growing. Most places close at 10pm though.
I agree with the others though, there is always something to do in Raleigh or Charlotte.
Good luck with your decision.

I lived in the Bronx most of my life... and moved to Morrisville, NC (next to Cary) for about 8 months (now live in Texas).....
Here is what I found out about the RDU area:
1. Durham has cheaper houses but higher taxes. I think Durham was around 1.3% and Raleigh/Cary/etc were around .9 to .99 (I forget exact numbers). So for a $150K house you pay about $1950/yr in taxes in Durham and $1350/yr elsewhere...about $50 difference/month. Not that big of a deal but something to consider.
2. Stay away from the city part of Durham or some cheaper areas off of Rte 55. Around Southpoint is nice, but a little pricey. I looked just across highway 40 across the mall and found cheaper, but older homes.
3. Highway 40 traffic is bad, but it is bad going into RTP. I had no problems commuting from Morrisville over towards Capital Blvd on the north side of Raleigh.
4. The NC Honda-tech guys are AWESOME !! Great bunch of guys who IMMEDIATELY made me feel like home!!! Can't thank them enough !!!!
5. You can find any chain restaurant in the area, but nothing is open very late or late on Sundays.
6. Close to VIR
My Sister-in-law lives in Charlotte and I only spent a few weekends/weekdays there:
1. Similar priced homes but I "think" the schools are not as good as the RTP area (important even if you don't have kids, think resale value).
2. The little downtown is great. Raleigh doesn't have ANYTHING. Charlotte is actually a nice little downtown. (Size is relative, Splat calls it big, I call it small since I am from NYC.)
3. RTP seems to be tech, bio and Charlotte seems to be finance/banking careers
My wife & I are praying about moving back to the Southeast. The metro areas that we are looking at are:
1. Atlanta (I always hated this place, but her job is either here or RTP). At least the 'burbs of Atlanta are ok as long as you don't have to work downtown. We also visited a church there that we think we really like (I know the pastor from NYC.)
2. Raleigh/Durham area (RTP)
3. Greensboro, NC
4. Greenville, SC or Columbia, SC (don't know much about them, just researching now)

Oy. Go to any of the large (a thousand homes is not uncommon) 400k+ neighborhoods in the exploding areas around I-540 and you will find your transplant support groups. One of my work buddies lives in such a joint - only one other family in his section is native NC. The rest are NY, NJ, PA or CA.
David is mostly right-on with his comments, but downtown Raleigh is undergoing a reinvention of sorts. Lots more arts, lots more culture, many bistro-type restaurants. The city planners have invested quite a bit in revitalization, and it seems to be paying off. We're still behind CLT when it comes to nightlife, but I don't go looking for much of that anymore, either. I like my quiet little spot in BFE

Move to Wilmington... Trust me, you'll like it MUCH better.
However, property and housing is quite expensive lately... When my parents built their house 17 years ago, they built it for a total of $150,000 (Large enough to accomidate a family of 5, with a HUGE yard, 2 car garage, etc), and now it's worth $500,000+.
I'm buying land about 15-20 minutes out of town in Pender County, I can buy the land for $20,000 or so (Have it paid before I build). And then build a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 1,500sqft house with a detached 4 bay garage for around $80,000 or so.
That's the plan.
