Honda keeps its plans to itself. No one knows when the next generation NSX will be out, let alone what kind of engine it has. All there is are speculation and rumors, many of which conflict with each other.

However, given the refresh for 2002, don't expect to see a new car as a 2003 model.

F*** Mo ***** Trend. Truth is no one outside of Honda knows much of anything. Think about it, the new Accord is coming out this fall and does anybody know what engine will be in it? No. Everyone is pretty certain there will be a 6 spd Accord Coupe but no one knows how much power, what displacement, and what configuration the engine will be (V6 I assumed).

Thus, for the NSX I would take nonsensical rumors with a grain of salt and some dramamine. I think Honda knows the importance of a V8 in their lineup and the fact that it gives them a lot more flexibility in power output. I think Honda also knows that they can pull no punchs with the new NSX, otherwise every new kid on the block is going to kick its 455 (Baby Aston Martin, New Viper, GT40, C6 Vette, Baby Lambo, Porsche Carrera and Boxster S, Infiniti Skyline, and others...).

The power of dreams.

Actually there might be some truths to that. In 3/02 issue of BestCar Magazine (Jap publication), the insiders at Honda released some info in regards to the Nxt NSX: It will be a hybrid high torque 3.6 liter V-6 + IMA (electric motors that drives all 4 wheels) that puts out 400+HP while still able to do 50+mpg. The DN-X Dualnote concept of last year's Tokyo Motor Show IS the prototype for the next gen NSX. But simultaneously Honda was still developing their V-8's for their Legends (RL) but at this time they froze the development due to R&D costs. It was reported by BestCar that the development of a high output 4.0 liter V-8 will cost Honda some $800 million USD when all is said and done. Why did HOnda chose this route for the next NSX, you ask? Because emission laws will tighten up in the future and costs and availability of petroleum will make gas guzzling, air-polluting sports cars of this era obsolete, just like what happened to Domestic muscle cars of the 70's. The environmental friendly NSX of today that puts out 24mpg while makes LEV rating WILL be considered a gas guzzler/air polluter by tomorrow's std. It makes perfect sense that Honda, being smart and sensible, will go with this route. Sad for us purists who like their favorites with V-8's that has more raw power vs. V-6's , but that's the way it goes.

BestCar is not the most credible of news sources but I think you have a point in the environmentally thing. If the NSX could still be a great sports car but have good gas mileage I think that is a route Honda would take. I still seriously doubt the DualNote is the NSX prototype because it is too far out of the spirit of the NSX. The only similarity it has with the NSX is that it is mid engined. It is not RWD, it is not a 2 seater, and its profile is much bigger and different than the NSX. If the NSX were to get IMA I imagine Honda would keep it RWD.

The rumors that the NSX would be a V6 AWD IMA probably came from spys hearing about the DualNote. Honda may be considering using the DualNote to bridge the gap between the NSX and S2000. However, the one thing that could possibly mean that the DualNote is in fact the next gen NSX is that no one has any pictures or info about the next gen NSX other than the rumor that it will be a V8.

I don't believe anything unless it's an official announcement from Honda.
