Default Might be a stupid question..

Well i recently bought a 99 Civic Ex and it didnt come with the keyless entry remote..Ive read something about having to have the factory radio in for it to work but i no longer have the factory radio. Can i just buy a new remote and program it or do i have to have the factory radio?

you need the factory radio for the dome light to work properly i think. you shouldn't have any problems, as long as your car had it to begin with. just get a remote and program it.

yes they did, and the keyless remote should be seperate from the stock oem radio, i have an aftermarket radio in my 99 ex and my keyless remote was uneffected.

The '96-'98 Civic keyless is different than the '99-'00 Civic keyless. For the '99-'00 Civics, the keyless unit is seperate form the radio. For the '96-'98 Civics, the keyless rides on the radio.

Removal of the stock radio in a '96-'98 Civic will cause the keyless to stop working. It will also cause the dome light to cease function. I know the dome light can easily be fixed with some wiring (a search on this site should turn up what to do).

If you have purchased a '96-'98 Civic EX with an aftermarket radio you can get stock keyless just by buying a replacement radio (the actual radio, not the CD or cassette slave) and a stock remote.

<-- Owner of a '98 EX coupe and previously a '97 EX coupe. Both cars came stock with keyless and I know how it works on these years.
