HID Reverse Lights??
I've been toying with the idea of putting hid's in the reverse lights, like an H3 size bulb set-up. Some that I've asked their opinions about it all argue the same " heat factor" angle, which I agree. Although my theory (outlandish as it may be) is the fact that being reverse lights only, will never see more than 10 minutes of continuous use (in the extreme), in a lifetime. Besides that, TRUE hid systems were always pitched as operating at a much lower temp than traditional incandescent lights. I can't be the first hopeless HMC lover to dream of this, so anyone have any input??
i dont see why you couldnt do it i mean really you can do anything you want to it all just depends on how much time and money your willing to put into it.... what's the worst that could happen? it not work?
I liek your idea of an H1\H3 bulb, cause if you think about it, even with the heat factor, they arent on for very long at all, so i dont see how it would heat up and melt anything unless you were trying to do the 1/4 mile backwards in the dark. The only concern in my mind are the fuses. Prob would need to get ones that can handle more power, i dont see the stock ones holding up to the electricity use of h1/h3 bulbs in place of tiny little 5-watt bulbs, lol.
If anything, look into http://www.superbrightLEDs.com, you could find some Bright LED bulbs there that would put out much more light than any OEM reverse light, and little to no heat at all either.

It's been done before but remember, HID bulbs take 30 secs to warm up to its full potential...
about the fusing issue a little relay harness can solve that problem but that's just wasting money and time for nothing

If you're going for FUNCTION, I'd suggest trying to just fab up some h1/h3 halogens or something in there and see how they do. Since it takes several minutes for HID's to "warm up," it seems like a counterintuitive step towards the functionality of this project.

it's about 20-25 secs until they're fully working. However, the housing is ridiculously small and you'd have to modify the bulb which pretty much won't do much. Instead of lightning up the road behind the car, it might just shoot up or to the left or right.
So that's 200 bucks in the garbage for something that's meaningless, stupid, waste of your time and most of all: rice...
