VIR Gold Cup (vintage race) thread - what y'all missed on Sunday
I made plans with the ILM crew and Zygspeed to meet up early at VIR for the Gold Cup vintage race. I'm glad I did - there was some serious hardware there. Here are a few of my pics:
Volvo P1800's

Jaguar (E-Type?)

V12 Jag

Bad-*** Dodge Challenger - this car was absolutely walking everything on track. He lapped the race leaders in a 10-15 lap sprint. He wasn't eligible for a trophy as he was far above the class he raced in (GT350's and a 911 were the podium cars).

One of three GT40's at the track. I believe all were authentic. This one was RHD

Mercedes-Benz 230 SL race car. I hope to be cruising around in one of these some day.

Volvo P1800

Mini panel van

Maserati Ghibli. Just hanging out in the parking lot

Aston Martin Vantage Coupe. Yours for only $110k.

Blort Alert!!!
1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster

Another GT40

Jaguar D-Type

Old Jag saloon

Lotus Europa

Carroll Shelby himself handing out trophies. Talked to a guy who owns an original GT 350-H, he was able to get Mr. Shelby to sign the glove box lid.

All in all, great times. I was there with GO-FIGHT-KILL and itrsteez with his lady, and met the Quebecois in the Civic Si race car (sorry, have already forgotten names
) and Zygspeed while the rest of the ricers were lined up at the gates waiting to be let in.

It was definately a good time, I felt jipped for the $20 entry fee (Got there at the end of the race), but man, those were some amazing cars. Pat, I wish I would have taken you up on your offer for sun screen.

Y'all missed several races when you went to get checked in to the hotel. I was on my own just riding around and taking a few shots, then met up with Ed and the Montreal guys.

nice pics of nice cars. I bet the GT40s sounded amazing
i love classic 4 and 6 cyl imports. the sounds they make, the smell, the wood(usually) steering wheel and shift ****, the clunk they make as you shift gears, gear wine. the old style latch seat belts (like the 240z). they are freakin sweet haha
Speed used to ahve a show, Test Drive i think, with Allan Ducadnay (or however you spell it) where they drove classic cars from on particular brand. The Ferrari one is great. the sounds, the cars ooohhh yaI had to go for a drive in the R after watching that haha

Isn't that great? Combination of oil, old leather, worn Bakelite and wood. (Sigh.)

Looks like the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association has a four-day event at VIR this fall (end of September).
