Default sound comming from tranny, help

ok so im looking at buying a eg hatch si and it has about 160k miles on it so stuff is a bit old, and when i test drove it the guy said a friend told him his pilot bearing is going bad, but not sure if thats it cuz ive heard that wouldnt be the source... but anyways test drove it, engaged gears fine from the way it seemed no slippin or grinding but when i layed off the gas in 1st it made a rubbing/ hittin sound and when in a gear i could do a little circle with the shifter in almost every gear, felt kinda like if their was play between where the shifter and the shifter arm met... and it was a stock clutch and stock shifter and he said hes never had tranny probs... not sure what to search that under so help would be nice, thanks

ohh and they said it had a stock exhaust just put on and think the guys that put it on half ***'d it and think the exhaust might be rubbing against stomething and that could be the source of the prob... this is all from them not me

i don't think its the exhaust rubbing anything because then you would have very little play and a harder time putting it in gear. to me it sounds like your throw out bearing is shot.
