I am building an EG hatch for autox. I would really like to run 245/45/15 (or 245/40/15 is I can find something) in the front and 225/45/15 or 205/50/15 in the rear. My plan is to use 15x8 wheels in the front. In the rear, 15x8 if i use 225 width tires and 15x7 if i use 205 width tires.

I plan to just raise the car until I have clearance with the fender. I am mostly worried about running enough offset to clear the suspension on 15x8s. From what I can tell from searching so far is that +24/25 is required in the rear. I have no idea what offset is necessary in the front.

 

Why do you want to run such wide tires?

 

The car is being built for autox.

 

Maybe you should consider getting sicky tires for auto x (such as the Falken Azenis Rt-615) as oppose to wide tires.

 

The tires I am referring to will be DOT R compound tires.

 

You should look into better tires, not wider. Also, you have to take into account the limits of your chassis as far as how wide of a wheel you can run.

 

Guys, no disrespect. I know everyone on this forum takes on the role of steering noobs on the right path. But I've been autoxing since 2001. I have enough knowledge to design my own setup. All I am asking for is the minimum offset that will fit 15x8 wheels on the car. I will leave some margin of error for tire width.

 

The other place you could ask it the drag forum, they might have a bit more experience with wider rims.

I'm wondering what you're going to run that comes in a 245-15. Right now all that is available are the 225s and the new Hoosier 275. That being said, you can run 225s on an 8" wheel up front. The guys running 8" wide wheels run a 5" backspace up front.

Don't do that. Just hack/roll your fenders up until they fit without rubbing. 225-15s should fit with minor rubbing in the front, and 205-15s should fit in the back. It depends what camber you're running as well.

Since it's for autocross, and you're getting R compound tires, go as wide as you like. Just remember that any change to the outer diameter affects your effective gearing. And keep the wheel width in the range specified by the tire manufacturer.

43mm backspacing is like 65mm negative offset, and add an 8mm spacer you have -73mm offset. Probably meant 43mm positive offset.

Backspacing is measured from the edge of the backside of the wheel to the backside of the hub. Offset is measured from the center of the wheel to the backside of the hub.

Just wanted to help clarify.

yeah, pretty sure you mean offset. which would be 15x7.5 in +43 with an 8mm spacer.

that would make the wheel at an effective +35 offset.

 

Thanks a lot. To the comments about the 245, I was confused. Theres a local here that was running 240 avon's slicks and I assumed he was talking about 245 R6's. I'll be starting off with 225 R6s in the front and 205 in the rear.
