Default turbo sandrail

budget turbo sandrail. heh

spec: 1800cc vw bus engine & transaxle, custom tube frame chassis, 2600cc '914 porsche' stroker kit, unknown chrysler t3 turbo @ ???psi, holley 440 four barrel carbeurator, napa brand mechanical oil pressure gauge. everything fabbed in house except for the seats. heh.

still needs a few things; paint, clutch, bit more tuning adjustment, etc.

sure is fun though haha

I don't imagine the little bit of lag is going to matter, as most sandrails run WOT pretty much all the time. Awesome work.

Interesting carb setup. Should work pretty darn well!

On the chassis, the only thing I'd suggest is running a bar from the main hoop, up to the bend above your head. Just some added safety.
Aside from that, looks like she should be a ton of fun!

any reason you went draw through instead of blow through?
i was under the impression that a draw through setup wasnt that great for the turbo.

either way it looks like a fun rail.
probably wont win any beauty contests, but i bit it rips

good job!

there is a wheelie bar for it, somewhere, the place in the first pic i believe where you can see the 2 bolt holes on the back hoops is where the skid pan/wheelie bar mounts, as well as underneath the engine.

it wasn't my design idea, but it works and the little tiny bit of lag is hardly noticable, in fact i'd say it probably spools sooner than my t3/t04e 60 trim did on my d series. hah

the reason for draw through versus blow through was simplicity, blow through requires some extensive carb mods. we don't really care about the turbo, i have a whole pile of these old chrysler t3's.

i guess it's worth mentioning now that my dad did all the welding (he's been a pressure welder for 25 years and general welder since he was 16 or so. hah)

what do you mean about coming from the main bar to the hoop? (i know this chassis is strong as hell btw, i've rolled it a couple times)

here's a picture of the rail in the sand, long before we ever thought about putting a turbo on it haha.

nope, since the engine sits so far behind the axels you end up breaking off the cooling shroud from the engine which sucks.

you shoudl install really big tires all around, so you can flip it over and drive upside down too, like those remote control cars from back in the day

Sweet!!
A drawthrough turbo type 4 was the last thing i thought i would see on HT. Be carefull with the boost the stock head sealing is not the best. Here is a pic of my turbo type 4 in my 55 bug

i honestly have no idea how much boost we're pushing. if it makes any difference the heads aren't really stock either. i'm pretty sure it's held on with ARP's too or some equivalent.

where's the damn turbo on your setup?? haha it's buried!

looks twin turboed maybe, just a guess by how everything is running in that pick

Whats the 914 stroker kit, that deserves some explaining, i am curious. Other than that I am impressed by how fun that sand rail looks, very cool.

o yea, and I also like the T valve on the oil feed. I reality that is an idea that more of us should use in our cars, i know I have an issue with my GT28R blowing oil because my feed pressure is a little too high. It's a nice easy way to control that volume a little bit, sweet idea.

yeah that oil feed line is most of the feed kit that i designed for my d16y8 turbo kit that i have since parted out. i had a line running from the block up to the intake manifold where i had that needle valve installed, then i had a tee for the feed line and the oil pressure gauge off that. it worked really well too. i think the needle valve was less than $1 too. all my feed line are npt though, i never got in to the jic fittings.

the 914 stroker kit brings it from an 1800cc to a 2600cc, replaces the crank, rods, pistons, etc. i believe the heads are also ported & polished.
this is just what i can remember, and if the vw guy knows better i wouldn't be offended if he corrected me.
