motor isnt dropping in
i have an h22a going into a prelude 4th gen, now the tranny is attached and the mount goes into the passenger side fine, but i can't get the driver side to clear, its off 1mm, hitting the crank pully... what should i do? i can't remove teh crank pully the tranny is already on
You can still remove the crank pulley with the tranny attached - in fact, I recommend dropping the motor in with the pulley off for an inch or so of room. You don't want to damage the crank banging the pulley against the frame of your car. You'll need a crank pulley holder to, you guessed it, hold the pulley still while you break the pulley bolt with a 19mm socket. You'll need a 1/2 breaker bar to use the crank pulley tool.

I just did this about 2 months ago. It might sound crazy to you because I thought it was crazy when I heard it but, remove your cross member or whatever that thing is that the front motor mount bolts to. I spent about 3hrs trying to drop the motor and trans in until a friend removed mine. Motor went in about 2 mins after removing it lol. The reason we do this is to get the motor and trans to almost hit the ground and then lift it back into place.
Also make sure that the tranny end is tilted toward the ground on about a 30-35 degree angle. Remove both the drivers side mount and the tranny mount. When you get everything lined up after you get the rear mount in place then put the drivers side and the tranny mount back on. Should take about 20 mins for the process with hand tools.

who would think that 2-3inches could mean so much

Where are you getting the idea that you need to remove the tranny to remove the crank pulley? That makes no sense.
What everyone is telling you is right. The engine needs to go in with the trans pointed towards the ground, then leveled out as it gets put in the car. It'll have to come forward to clear the windshield shelf, then go back towards the firewall once the engine is down in place.

teh crank pulley isn't on/in the tranny, its on the opposite side of the motor
they're saying take it off and you'll gain much more room

yeah, just pull the engine back out, it isnt bolted in, enough to get your air gun enough room, and take it off.

I got mine in with the crank pulley on but all tranny and engine mounts off. I used a load leveler to lower the passenger side really low to dip that side in first, then slowly lower the engine while leveling out the engine side.

it helps, but not necessarily needed. I have never used one.

i think its easier with a cherry picker just swing in the tranny first then the motor side and done
