Default throw-out bearing?

Hey guys,

I'm having problems with my B18C1 (with a Type-R tranny), it used to be when I would shift at 3000RPMs, it would sound like a BOV, or squealing like belt slippage but not belt slippage.

now its happening more and more and now it's squealing when I'm engine braking below 3000RPM

I was told this was the throw out bearing, and that some people go through these like mustard, is this diagnosis correct? if so, how much would a new one ring me? I was also told this was a 45 minute job.. anyone done this be able to offer me tips?

thanks
~Lorne

The quiet "BOV" noise in between shifts is normal, it's a combination of the throw out bearing, and the clutch cylinders (Master/Slave) making noise. And no, people do NOT go through these like mustard, unless you're changing your clutch just as often... It's a rare part to go bad. Also, I'd LOVE to meet the mechanic that can change a clutch in 45 minutes...

Do you understand what a throwout bearing is?

Your other noise sounds like your differential making noise.

It's nothing to worry about, as long as it doesn't get louder... If you're feeling bad about your transmission noise, come for a ride in my car, you'll feel MUUUCCCHHH better.

And just for future reference, there's no bumping in the Type-R forum.

Please don't bump in this forum. It is against forum policy.

The sound you're describing ..... if you were to be travelling down the interstate in 5th gear and you let off the gas completely, do you still hear the whining?

There are alot of bearings on the mainshaft, countershaft, and clutch housing ... and I can guarantee you not a single one takes 45 minutes to fix. If you need into the tranny, you have to pull it. You're looking at hours.

Well he's talking about the throwout bearing, which is NOT inside the the transmission casing (I'm sure you know that, I'm just clarifying for him).

The other bearings... Yeah, I had all of mine replaced 20,000 miles ago, $300 for 6 bearings, and $120 for labor... As much money as I've spent on this transmission of mine, I may as well of just bought a brand new one. Which I think I'm leaning towards right now, because NO ONE can figure out what this noise is... It's not hurting anything, but it's just really annoying to drive with the windows up.

I know ... I was generalizing since we're not 100% sure of what's wrong. Could be one of many bearings

And I feel your pain with the tranny. My rebuild is happening next week. New clutch, new 3-4 synchro, 7 bearings and 2 seals. Parts: $450 Labour: $640 (8Hx$80/). This is what happens to your tranny when the previous owner throws in an ACT 6 puck and likes to drag race. Man I'm so glad I gave my car a good home.

so in the bulk of it this noise would seem to be normal?

and it does do it in neutral if i rev the car over 3000rpm

Haha, my transmission is already making a **** ton of noise, and I just put in an unsprung ACT 6 puck, haha. I don't give a ****, if it's on its way out, it's on its way out, I'll just buy a new one.

I wouldn't stress it duder, it's just normal noise... How many miles on your car?

the car has 214,000KM, the motor was rebuilt with CTR pistons and the tranny has like under 80000KM or so...

I had a squeeking to shrilling noise come from my tranny before. It was the pilot bearing going out. But it only takes me about an hour to get my trans out and another 10 mins to tear it done for a rebuild. Its not too bad.

I will throw my 2 cents into this topic.

I have experienced the same issue some of you are describing and I did 2 things to my ITR. First the dealer told me they had to lubricate the spring located by the clutch pedal. At first that worked for a while and the noise went away. The problem came back and again they did the same thing, it went away for a couple of days & it came back again. The third and last time the dealer told me it was the throw out bearing that was bad. Ever since then I havent had thae same problem.

Could be the pilot bearing. When I did my clutch, the pilot bearing was very rough, and I was hearing noise from it as well. However, it was not this loud. Both should be replaced when the clutch is done.

I laughed when I saw the size of that bearing (pilot). Not much bigger than a skate bearing

:edit: So the clutch was replaced with the trans and both have 80,000km on them? That would be 93K mi on the car, and 36.5K mi on the tranny & clutch for you non-metric folks (2.2km = 1mi). Is this a factory or aftermarket clutch? If factory, is it an R clutch or a GS-R clutch? (Original post was for B18C1 with R trans). Factory R clutch should last longer than 36K mi / 80K km (although not for some people ). Throwout and pilot bearings are usually done by the time the friction material is worn down. So could be time for a throwout bearing. However, driving the throwout (or pilot, or tranny bearings) noisy won't hurt anything, so unless the clutch is slipping, grabbing, chattering, or the tranny is having shifting problems (or is hard to get into gear), I think you can run it for awhile before you have to change anything. Given the miles on the car, when you change the clutch, it's probably a good idea to change the trans (rubber) bushing/mount, and possibly the motor busing/mounts too - particularly if you are getting wheel hop at launch.
