thats something you have to decide for yourself. personnally i think $5000 is a good start but i'm certain other will disagree.
you also dont want rear speakers.

just like you and me speaker companies are competing to be the best...but they need to make things affordable also for cheaper people...so the more you spend on speakers generally the better it sounds...5k is alot but you can get a nice system by just replacing stock with infinities or something...infinities are my favorite but try them out and decide yourself...you dont need 20 speakers...its a car for christ sake...i dont even know if they have that many in theatres...there is much less space to fill in a car for sound purposes...on the other hand you can have seperate components such as mid, tweets, and lows or subs...that really the ultimate with a good crossover
I agree with EBP_SI, [will it never end], the best speakers for you are the ones you like the sound of best.
There are more then a few good brands, ["high end"] IMO Hertz, [no not the rent a car] makes some very nice stuff, not cheap... http://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/default_en.htm check out the Mille line.
Best HU, Alpine of coarse, although if you do not mind ugly, McIntosh makes one hell of a HU... http://www.mcintoshlabs.com/mc...MX406 but like I said it is retro ugly IMHO.

For a decent SQ oriented HU, I like the Pioneer Premier DEX-P9, along with the DEQ-P9, get this setup with your amps, run it active on a 3-way front stage. The HU and DSp will run you a little under $2000 for the set, then speakers can run anywhere from $500 to $5000. Its all up to you.
put your speaker money in a front component set, dont spend a dime on your rear speakers.
heres a list of some speaker brands and where they fall:
high end:
MB Quart
Morel
Boston
Diamond
Focal
Dynaudio
JL (ZX series)
Mid Range:
Infinity
Rockford fosgate
JBL
Kenwood
Pioneer
Kicker
Alpine
Low End (dont bother wasting your money):
Jensen
Dual
a good speaker sounds good, a great speaker sounds transparent (meaning it sounds like its live)
Have you ever had a stereo system in a car before? Often times people dont have a realistic grasp on how much it will cost for a quality car setup. If you havent it probably wont be worth it for you to spend 2 grand on components when you wont be able to tell the difference between them and a $500 set.
BTW, a component set consists of a woofer, tweeter, and crossover for both sides. buy a component set dont just add tweeters to coaxials.

I myself have never had a system in any previous car. I think it would be a good investment in doing this. I honestly would not mind spending 500 on a regualar setup. 1000 or even 2000 is a bit much for me. I do love great sound but would settle for a decent setup if it costs that much. I will look into these speakers to see whats the best fit for me. Thanks for all the advice...
One more question. Whats the best cd deck receiver out there? I had a sony explode on my previous car. It wasn't that bad but I definitely want an upgrade. As you know the stero setup in my car is quit big.
http://civic2001.myphotoalbum....ivic4
I been thinking on a Kenwood DDX6019. I don't want a small cd deck on the car. It doesnt look right to me. I rather the big screen deck as it would fit in well with the overall look of it. Any ideas on good economical touch screen decks I can use?

wow...some ignorant responses...you need all 4 speakers regardless of what anyone says. i would do some research man. go to some car audio outfits and listin for yourself. each brand has its uniqe sound. you also need to decide what you want to spend. no matter what, price will always be a factor. there are 1000 dollar speakers out there but it may not be nessicary for you. inphinty isn't bad, can be tiny and a little high pitched, i would recomend a sub if you use them. alpine and polk have decent all around speakers. pioneer in my op sounds like you listining in a bathroom, dull and echoy. thats my opinoin...yours may differ. GO LISTEN and see what you like. determine how loud you want it, do you want to amp it? are you just going to power it with the head unit? head units to choose i would look at pioneer, alpine, and eclipse. they are pretty much the leaders out there. there some other underground stuff, but expect to pay an arm and leg for it.
thats my 2 cents. this stuff is all preference. everyone has their own opinon on how it should sound as do i, but for being in the car audio indstry for 5 yrs i think i have some reputable knowledge.
good luck

for sq oriented, 100% focus on the front stage in my opinion, so 'two' speakers/channels. Rear-fill complicates the sound stage and imaging.

but its cool to have surround sound yo....
on a more serious note theres no reason to have more than 2 channels when playing regular cd's as they're only recorded in 2 channels. if we we're talking about using a multichannel source that would be a different story. sure you can DSP a 2 channel source and create virtual rear channels but you're not really going to gain anythign and are more than likely to expletive something up.

if you noticed, everything i said was prefrence. there is no right or wrong when it comes to this stuff. you may think something sounds good when i think it sounds like crap.
3rd, while you may not need all 4 speakers to hear stereo sound, most new headunits split the sound so that the rears are fills. they play the more wide end of the sound spectrum then the fronts. thats why if you fade to the rear, it almost sounds dull. now, if we are using an external amp, you may not need all 4 since the amp will have built in crossovers, and generally, when you run the rca's from the headunit, it sends "true sound"
on a fourth note, i retract the term "need" all 4 speakers. obviously you don't need them. i used the term "need" in sales a lot, its an easier way to "sell"

1. most headunits mirror the front and back signals so that the front left is the same as the rear left. when you fade to the rear what you're hearing is a different in acoustics of the car.

haha pOtential or whatever his name is on here has made a complete *** out of himself. i feel bad for the OP having some dimwit like this guy screwing with his head.
for a good sq system all you need is a good set of front stage speakers; amplified by a quality 2 channel amp.. and a single 10 or 12 inch sub(preference on size) in a sealed or properly tuned ported box, a quality class d mono sub amp and a good headunit.. as well as a nice amount of sound deadener.
a good install with decent equipment will nearly always out-do a half *** install with high end stuff..
for headunits.. look into the likes of alpine, pioneer(premier), eclipse, etc.
for front speakers.. MB quart, focal, JL, alpine, cadence, dynaudio, hertz, boston acoustic, cdt, a/d/s, etc etc
speaker amps.. JL, zapco, soundstream, phoenix gold, etc etc
sub amps.. zapco, hifonics, JL, infinity, mtx, rockford fosgate etc.
everything has a price... and you get what you pay for.. most of the equipment listed is quite high end stuff and can get pricey.. so it depends on what you want to spend.
stick to advice from fcm, b18c, ebp si.. most others that chime in are seemingly quite lost when it comes to car audio sometimes.
and for the record.. rear speakers are not needed 99% of the time to complete a pure, full, lively and natural sounding sound quality stereo.
