Default professional clearcoat over rustoleum????

is it a bad idea to use a clearcoat over the rustoleum paint to give it an extra gloss. i was thinking about getting clear coat from a paint shop and mix it with hardener, then spray over the rustoleum paint. will using clear also give it an extra nice gloss? thanks

if your gonna go to all the trouble and expense of clearing it, it's not much harder to spray a little basecoat as well and that way you can be sure it will work. And more than likely look better too. But to answer your question a bit more directly, probably not, usually when clear is applied you spray it on a surface that has fresh basecoat on it for adhesion purposes, or in other cases it is applied on a surface that has been sanded. chances are that even if you sanded the rustoleum you would probably discolor it or make the color uneven, and if you cleared over fresh rustoleum its completely hit or mis as to whether or not it's gonna lift, fish eye, or stick for any length of time depending upon what brand of clear you use. But I've never tried it so I can't say for sure.

If you want a cheaper alternative to clearing with urethane clear, I think rustoleum make some type of rattle can clear that would probably give you a better gloss and be compatible with their other products.
