Default Head Gasket

I bought my 97 Sh about 2 weeks ago with 179k miles, and a buddy of mine said i should replace the head gasket because he removed the oil cap while the engine was runing and noticed that there was some very light white smoke coming out.

He also said the it shouldnt be blowing (air not smoke) that much and that its causing me to loose compression... and to have my valves adjusted... :/

should i get a cometic gasket and have the valves tweaked?

you don't have anything supportive to get aftermarket... i could see taking out the middle layer of the OEM headgasket for a little bump in compression. prob notice a difference by getting a tune up

When they change the headgasket, they'll have to adjust the valves anyway (or at least they should). Get some quotes

Not to mention if you go cometic the head/block will have to be shaved, and you might as well have headwork done as well.

that can't be WITH labor, the parts are nearly that much. If a timing belt change is around $750 or so I'd expect a headgasket to be around $1k.

There isn't anythng wrong cometic either, they are just as good as stock.

I'd do a compression and leakdown test before you start replacing things you may not need to.

$115 for a head gasket change and all the parts? Run away as far as you can from that....he'll probably put everything back together with old pizza boxes.

There's way too much stuff involved to only charge $115. Seriously.

don't waste your money , your headgasket isn't blown. change your oil and do a compression test. it will speak volumes.

My head gasket is being repalced as we speak due to a leak into cyl #3.......Local honda dealer qouted 250 for head gasket set and 600 for labor. 150 sounds too fishy!!! get a qoute from another shop and you'll see for yourself

Sorry, but it wasn't a head gasket. You must be confused.

Yeah it was probably the valve cover gasket. Def not the headgasket. You would have spent WAAAAAYYYY more than $140.
