I recently got an emissions warning light and took my car in for a diagnostic. They tell me the NOx3 cat. (absorbs nitrogen oxide) is shot. Technicians cannot tell my why. Worse, it is not covered by my extended warranty, and the manufacturer warranty on that specific part is only 8 years or 80K miles (I am at 97K).

The shop (dealer where I bought the car; http://hersonshonda.com/) tells me the bottom line is $1,600 for the repair, with $1,300 of that for parts. They also tell me they will need to break some bolts holding the exhaust assembly together and do some welding. This all sounds like complete nonsense. Although I cannot find that specific cat. for sale online, one close match for Civics of that year comes in at around $240.

I have read of some people getting an exception from Honda Customer Care, so that is my next step. Otherwise, any suggestions?

 

Go to an independent shop and have them clear the code (idiot light)and read it again. The code might not show up. The dealer is BSing you. You can go to any muffler shop and have them replace your cat. Even if they had to cut and weld you aren't looking at more than 1.5 hours of labor. So figure.. aftermarket cat, $200 tops, labor 1.5*$75.


My advice to you is to shop around at independent shops. They will save you a ton of cash in this case.
