Does that window trim that rots and flakes off actually seal anything?

Default Does that window trim that rots and flakes off actually seal anything?

Rather than replace that thing, I was thinking of painting it like many have done... but I noticed on mine it seems to have a rubberized type of coating and looks like it once sealed something judging by the edges (the seem flexible, like a seal... BUT that could just be the rotting messing stuff up). It if actually seals something, I prob. should replace it w. the OEM part if not, then paint!

SO does that thing seal anything or is it astethic only?

It covers the spot weds and keeps big crap from falling in the door.
remove it and paint it.
but you should put it back on.

Kind of off topic but kinda not. What is the silver piece that goes at the bottom of the rear window, and in between the window and the trunk? I need a new one and don't know what is called to search for one...

So then just painting it, as many others have really wouldn't be worth while because the seal (the rubber coat) wouldn't be there, correct?
