I need a ring gear for my B16 hydro transmission, which one?
I broke my stock diff due to wheelhop and in the process chipped 2 teeth on the ring gear. This is my first time doing tranny work so Im not familiar with all the variations between B series transmissions. Mine is from a JDM obd1 B16 swap, is the ring gear interchangeable with any that I can buy from the dealer?
If it is the OBD1 b16 hydro tranny (You will want to check this.....count the number of teeth)...., you will need the 4.40 B16 ring gear.

The ITR ring gear uses a different bolt pattern than the B16...
It is not a direct bolt in unless you use a GSR or Type R differential along with it.

according to this chart the ring gear tooth count on the LS and the B16 is not the same. the pinion gear is, so that's why the LS ends up with a taller final drive ratio right?
http://www.ff-squad.com/tech/temp/Bgears.htm
B16 is 66 and the LS is 64 is this info wrong or not all inclusive?
alsom do the tick marks in the tips of the teeth tell you anything about compatability? here are my 2 gears;
stock chipped b16 ring gear

replacement, maybe from an LS

The tick marks are identifying marks. If you put a mismatch setup it has the possibility of creating a whine. Won't happen everytime but, its one of those things you will find out after everything is said and done. That is why we change ring gears in matched sets.

ah, didnt know you saw this thread.
the ticks identify what exactly?
It actually makes less noise than it did from the factory. it used to whine at low load and low speed and now its pretty quiet all the time, but that doesn't mean I'm out of the woods yet right?
I just want to know what the hell i put in my tranny and if it will hold power haha

Parts are going to fail. RacerStev on here has been heat treating gears for me and I have been having awesome results. I went through about a dozen sets of gears and four final drives. Here is a thread about more info on that.

As far as the Ls gear, here is what I know as it sits in front of me. All of my LS ring gears have the same "ticks" on them.

All of my ITR ring gears have the same "ticks" on them.

The LS ring gear has 64 teeth and the ITR has 66 teeth. The ITR ring gear pattern and opening that slides on the diff is much larger than the LS differential pattern/opening.

thanks for your input. ya, im aware of the major differences like different bolt patterns and tooth counts. As you can see in my picture the gear I bought bolts right on and it does have the same number of teeth. It bolted right on and drive great so far. no noise no metal shavings (changed fluid once to check)
So i guess my new one is not an LS gear. it only has one row of ticks as you can see and that doesnt match up with any of the ones you posted. Maybe something that is pre obd1..
I must have some variation on a B16 ring gear I think, which would mean theres a good chance it's a 4.40 FDR. But why does it only have one row of ticks?
It's quiet and smooth so im gonna run it for now. I read your thread before but im not going over 450whp this year so i dont think Ill be stripping gears like you were.

Yeah, I don't have any B16a gears or else I would look at the notches/ticks to see.

I have 2, a sort of rusty one and my original F'd one you saw in the picture above. They have the same tickmarks as the 94+ LS but have 66 teeth not 64.

Take some measurements for records of the confirmed B16a ring gear. ID, thickness of the teeth area, thickness of the base bolt flange area, OD, etc.
I record all of these dims everytime I have a gear confirmed.

ya, ill do that, do you want the measurments for your records?
I plan on taking out the counter shaft and ring gear that I have installed right now and I will measure that too eventually. I'll be pissed if its exactly the same as the b16a ones...but at least I'll know then
