What else is going on now that you have gotten it out of reverse? Does the shifting between other gears seem fine?
Test with car not running, then with car running.

Your reverse gear selector may be broken, or the shaft that holds the idle reverse gear may be bent or loose. IF you rocked it and it came out, it sounds like there are parts clashing between the mainshaft and the countershaft (ie reverse idler gear and its accompanying parts) Could also be the bearings for both shafts, but then shifting for other gears would suffer as well.

Trying to slam the car in reverse when its going forward, or trying to slam it in when your already rolling in reverse will cause undue stress to those parts. If you ride the shifter, don't, all it does is place more stress on the collar and shift fork, there are detents in the forks for a reason. Whatever it is, its internal to the tranny.
