Default Removing Air Con. and Sound Deadening Tar/Material

Just wondering if anyone has a link or guide on how to remove the A/C and sound deadening and how much weight each of these items will save. For a 4th gen VTEC. Thanks.

It's real easy...just start unbolting all the ac components...and taking out the sound deadening is just stupid unless you're a pro road racer or drag racer...

Ripping out your a/c is not really that stupid. I am going to take mine out on my next day off because I don't feel like paying a mechanic to find out what is wrong with it and it will make my engine bay look cleaner. I can see that you think it is stupid if someone thinks they will gain like 20 hp from it though.

I haven't personally remove the tar/sound deadening material before, but I've heard of people using dry ice to freeze it then break/scrape it off.

Nah, your reason is stupid. lol

You don't even know what's wrong with it and you want to tear it out just because you don't want to pay a little bit of money to figure out what's wrong with it? It could be a simple fix. Not only that, you want to so the engine bay looks cleaner? LOL

That's how I removed it in my 5Gen. Dry ice works like a champ.

Yep, dry ice for the win. Break it up into little pieces and let it sit on the tar and freeze it, then it just flakes off.

Cleaner looking engine bay How much of a difference do u think it will make to the engine bay in terms of its tidyness when removing the A/C?

Maybe 20 or 30 lbs. All of the A/C plumbing is aluminum, so it's very light.

yup, the heaviest thing is the compressor.

I would carefully consider things before you rip your A/C out, I did it while I was in high school and regret it now.

If you do take it all out, I may buy it from you lol.

I used a heat gun to take out some of the sound deadening material in my trunk and under my rear seats. Just heat up a small section you want to remove, and then let it cool and harden. When you start chipping at it big chunks should come off.

I actually did make a thread with the weight of my car. It was several years ago and at that time I came up with 2275 lbs. I would estimate it's around 2100+ now, but I have not recently weighed it.

2100 lbs? Thats less than a thousand kilograms! Your car must be very fast now, and how does the car feel generally in terms of performance?

wow, thats pretty light... the car must be similar to a crx with an h22 swap performance-wise. do you have any recent pics of it?? interior shots and such???

how much diferent is the level of road and exhaust noise with and without the weight reduction??

also...do you realize how fast it would be if you had a turbo setup like md23vtec??? that thing would be a 9 second beast.

For a mostly stock H23 it's pretty quick....when I get traction, haha, but we all know how that goes. 1st and 2nd usually spin all the way through (depending on the road conditions) with my current tires. I plan to ge some Azenis when these wear out so that should be fun

Honestly the car is very quick to respond on everything; brakes, steering and the gas pedal. I don't drive like a jerk or anything, but I rarely slow down for on/off ramps and such

I am able push it forward and backward in the garage by just casually leaning on it.

If you like I can IM the link for my we-todd gallery of pics.

I won't lie to you the road noise is very apparent There's basically one sheet of thin steel between you and everything. I don't have a radio because I probably couldn't hear it over the exhaust, road noise and wind noise.

I have a turbo setup that is slowly getting pieced together but I just don't have as much $$$ as the great md23vtec The car is ready for it though with the traction bar setup and tons of room up front.

Can you give me a quick list of all the things you stripped out of the car? Thanks.

I took my AC out, because after we boosted it, no more room

plus, I gained like 450 horsepower from removing it, oh and my engine bay has so much more room now (seriously)

I have stock calipers, Brembo drilled rotors (I hoped they would be somewhat lighter but the difference is very small), and I have 15" Volk Te-37s at 8.8 lbs each. That with the 8lb flywheel is about a 50+lb loss on rotating mass.

I wouldn't even begin to have the time or patience to scrape the undercoating, plus the chances of rust wouldn't be worth it.

the ac argument is always going to be an issue but its easyest to just look at the cons and pros and see if its right for you.

common cons....
no ac so you get hot. or you can just not be a ***** and roll your windows down.
unless your car is an edition that you bought because of the options. in which case youd like it and keep it anyways.

common pros...
although ac compressors switch to a flywheel when not in use. they still can rob you of up to 6 hp throught your intire power band. thats not just one spot thats the whole thing. and when its on you can actualy feel it. at least i could when i had it and can in my girlfreinds car.

cleaner engine bay the tubes are gross as hell.

weight. not alot but it all adds up if you really care about weight

if you dont want it go for it. dont listen to everyone elses oppinions on it. also it has refrigerant thats under high pressure and will shoot out of the compressor housing its illigal and should be drained by a proffesional with proffesional equipment.
