It has come down a bit the past few days.
I saw it at 2.85 for 87 octane at Southern States Co-Operative this morning.
In the triangle I normally travel (Culpeper-Fredericksburg-Arlington-Prince William-Manassas, etc) all the 87 octane was under 3.00 again.

(1) UK's Brent Crude goes to strategic interests before it comes down to the consumer market.
(2) They refuse to increase dependence on imported oil by heavily taxing its use. The more gas you use, the more tax you pay.
We could argue some about whether or not it's a safer and more reasonable way to manage society.
