Default Anyone here have experience credit card AVS codes and avoiding internation fraud orders?

I know this isn't technically welding/fab related, but it kind of is because I took a payment FOR something welding/fab related Plus, I'm just used to being in this forum and I know people here more than other areas.

Anyway, I have never taken an international order before til yesterday, but checking the AVS codes in my transactions report it indicates XXSM. X's apparently mean insufficient information, the S I'm not sure, and the M means the card code was verified as a match.

Should I treat this order as fraud and refund to the card, or proceed? The order is from Canada, and the bill to and ship to was entered as the same. Should the address verify as the same, and do you think I should contact the buyer and ask for an explanation?

I have no idea on any technicalities, but I don't see any problem contacting the buyer since you are just looking out for his/her security.

anywhere other than the US = wire transfer Ive been had on CC and paypal by more people in canada than anywhere else. When you try to AVS a canada CC you cant type the postal code in and so you cant get a return, which makes you liable for the transaction if its chargeback or fraud.

The AVS system applies to US orders only. Depending on your settings in your virtual terminal an AVS error of that type may or may not result in a declined transaction.

International is always a risk, but we still do tons of it. I sell into Canada using my dealer network. I'd rather do 45 minutes worth of paperwork for a big dealer order than I would a $20 part.

any large international order i would only use wire transfer...

CC are dangerous for the vender. The customer could always decline charges and 95% of the time we won't ever get paid on it...

Hmmm I see.....

Well, at this time I have contacted the buyer and he seemed very upfront about everything. I just don't want to make the item, incurring quite a bit of parts cost, only to find my bank account having the cost deducted along with a chargeback fee.

I've never had a chargeback, so I'm not aware of the process. Can they get a chargeback even several weeks after the payment is made? This item will take me approximately 2-3 weeks to fabricate then send out. Upon his receipt of the item can he then still have the chargeback submitted and his money returned?

DO NOT ACCEPT AN INTERNATIONAL CREDIT CARD ORDER OVER THE PHONE.

Take it from me, dont do it. Get them to paypal it or send certified payment.

I didn't take it over the phone, it came direct through my website. I just got the payment confirmation in my email. Too late....

your can charge back 1 year with visa and 2 years with MC if my memory serves me right for just about any reason under the sun. Credit Cards are so risky to take as a merchant and almost 100% safe for the consumer. As a merchant you have almost no rights or recouse
