Default is this a good bike?

sorry for a thread like this, but Im in the market and this seems like a good deal, but I dont know.

2001 Ninja 500 for $800

"Hey I have an easy fix it starter bike. It was driven by a woman who laid on the throttle and crashed! its blue and silver with a brand new battery. Tires are good with a Muzz. exhaust. It can be dressed up with very little money. I have photos on my phone that can be sent if requested! The fairings in the front need replacing the plastic that covers the tach/speedometer needs replacing. Has about 9,300 miles. It needs a new windshield all of which can be bought on ebay dirt cheap. The bike will be showed tomorrow because I'm working late today. I have the clean title asking $800.00 or best offer! Please don't ask me to take $600.00 because the battery cost $100.00 by itself."

Check the pictures first for sure. If the bike is in Ok mechanical shape, it might be worth it.

I emailed the guy since its too late to call. I'll probably check it out if the pics look ok. I hope it checks out cuz I want a cheap bike thats in decent shape.

I'd rather save the money for gear, otherwise I have only enough for the bike and would have to wait for proper gear

on another note, some guy is trying to sell an 02 ninja 250 with 7500 miles for 2800!

Are people this stupid? doesnt he realize you can get a brand spanking new bike for a couple hundred more? he should be selling that thing for 1800 to 2000.

Not stupidity on the seller's part. They don't really need to sell it most of the time. It's stupidity on the buyer's part if they decide to buy it.

if it is ok mechanically "fingers crossed" I may not even care about fixing the fairing right away and just make it into a streetfighter.

Im seeing some ninja 500 fighters and they look decent.

I saw that ad. I'd be worried about frame/fork damage at that price.

You should buy my bike instead

I just saw some pics, and its not great. plus, its too far away.

there are a lot of cruisers for sale. but I'd rather not have a cruiser.

I may if its a last resort since I only have 1600 right now, and Im saving up till 2 grand. looking for a ninja 250, but those are going for 2500.

I have 0 patience, and that's what's required to get a good bike/car. I just have to wait it out i guess. but I need a bike by July, because I want to put in as many miles as I can this season.

keep it for half of next season, then buy myself a 600 f4i.

$1600 wont get you too far this time of year, especially since you dont want to travel and you only have $1600.

either bite the bullet and make the trip for a good deal, or save more money

so how much should I save?

I have no truck that I can transport the bike. I could rent a u-haul but thats a big hassle, and I have never done that before.

I'm finding a lot of (what do you call them?) standard bikes?

they older bikes that you make into cafe racers. They seem like deccent bikes. I may end up with one of those. many are going for $500, but I don't know.

how much you should save depends on what you want. circa $2000 for an F2, FZR, etc. circa $3500 for an F4/i, zx6, 600R.

as for transportation, i rented a pickup from enterprise.

i did some looking around chi town too and i saw the same thing: many older standard bikes. there was even a CB750 going for a good price.

there is an 89 cbr600 for sale, with 21000 for 1500. but its all the way in the south of the city. 78th street. so I told the guy I;d come see it, but that was before I realized how far away that is.

so screw it.

I mean yeah, I only need another 400 bux at least, I can wait a bit more.

I lude, is the red nighthawk yours on craig list?

and eglovg what did you end up doing on you first bike? what you get, how much etc?

I havent posted in the wanted sections of the local boards yet.

also there is a truck rental place, enterprise I think, a block away. so I guess I can do a pick up, BUT I dont know how to set the straps or anything.

You aren't interested in going too far away? I found a really nice bike around here. I live in Champaign, but there's a sweet bike in Tolono - Honda VF 500F Interceptor for around $1500, which you might be able to get for a little lower, perhaps. I love these bikes

I read a few reviews, tests on the bike. Nuttin' but good.

looks like a good bike, but its too far away. I dont have a way of bringing it back here. I live in lincolnwood, IL so thats near the north side of the city.

I just have to be patient and save a few hundred more.

I just want a good running bike by august at the latest, just because I want to at least put in 5K miles this season. I can probably ride till mid october so I think I can do 5k in 2.5 months easily.

especially if I commute to school sometimes, 30 miles a day round trip.

But if I bought a good 93 accord for only 1900, I should be able to get a decent bike for around that much! lol

You could always rent a trailer and do what that guy did.

Or you could ride it back

^ He can't, he only has an EX.

Got any riding friends? If so, just group up and take a half day road trip down here and bring it back that way.

What exactly are your reasons in not traveling outside of city limits, or even within certain parts of town?

I'd assume he's new to riding and doesn't want to have to ride it very far. I made my dad ride my bike back when I first bought it, an hour away

i dont have any riding friends, and I have only done my riding at msf, so none on the streets.

therefore Im not ready to ride a far distance to bring it home.

I may have to rent a truck and have my uncle help me out.

also I dont have "friends" perse, only aquaintences, and they are all unreliable douches.

I really need to meet some cool people.
