Default ****Egr block off plate??****

I've searched, and found that many of you have installed the block off plate (or made it) and did away with the egr valve. I've been trying to diagnose my code 12 that involves the lift sensor on the egr valve, and I want to determine if I just need to go ahead and purchase one, or just block it off by using such a plate. My questions are...

What are the pros and cons of installing the plate?

By installing it will I loose fuel consumption (not regulating the air involved), hp etc? How will it run?

Will I still throw a CEL after I've installed the plate, and cleared the ECM's memory from the code 12?

Thanks,

Yes, I've cleaned the valve several times, checked for vacume leaks, and also checked voltage going to the sensor itself.
I'm kind of stuck, and I'm not sure if I should get a new one or just block the damn thing off. I really don't want to spend the money on a new valve, and that NOT solve the problem......that's why I was inquiring about the block off plate. And no, I'm not "sticking tape over the CEL light", because I want to know if another problem may persist.
Thanks man,

I'm sorry if that sounded a little to blunt above, but I've had similer mech. problems with another vehicle in the past, and I've spent a lot of money trying to trouble shoot the problem that it didn't fix. Like I said I don't want to spend any more than I have too, and that not be the problem. Sometimes it's like finding a needle in a hay stack ya' know?
I could go ahead and buy it, and it doesn't work. What do I do next? Keep buying parts until I find the problem? Then I'm out of a lot of cash....with no problem solved.
I've diagnosed it literally, by the service manual, and I'm still clueless.
Thanks,

Incase you don't know EGR funtion is reduce NoX at cruise speeds , not at idle or wot. Blocking it off will be more cost effective, no horsepower gains will be made. EGR is an expensive peice from honda, I believe in the $200 range +. Depending on what year your vehicle is and what state you are in you may have to have it anyway to pass an emissions test yearly. I would maybe check into getting one from a low mileage car at a salvage yard.

Since the check engine light is already coming on for it now, getting rid of the egr valve altogether isn't gonna make it disappear.

Even when blocked off with the plate you typically have to have the sensor plugged into the harness and tied off somewhere to trick the ecu into thinking everything is ok.

Thanks a lot for the responses guys.
I do not have an emissions test in my state, and they're not to harsh on stuff like that here. I found a used one on e bay for $40 bucks, the guys user ratings seem pretty good. "He said that he has tested the valve and the sensor, and it works fine. What do you think?
Thanks again,
