Default emission problem

is anyone here an emission specialist? My ef failed emission hella bad.

failed:

HC (ppm) - cruise limit 180
cruise emissions: 215

Idle limit: 220
Idle emissions: 879

CO (%)- idle limit 1.2
Idle emissions: 4.19

the only thing it passed was

CO - cruise limit 1.3
emission- 0.86

Can anyone tell me what those failures mean. could it be a bad vacuum line in the manifold to fuel regulator? I'm really stumped

Maybe he'll chime in here, but PM "thesmogman" and send him a link to this thread, he'll tell you what you need

Was it a 2 speed idle or a loaded mode on a dyno?

What was the nox, co2 and o2 readings.

It looks like it is running rich and/or your cat is dying.

what year (84-91) and trim (si,dx,hf) is your car.

I think it was loaded on a dyno. I'm not sure about the NOX question. actually it was just CO. it has a N/A on CO + CO2.

its a 91 hatch, with a d16z6. thanks.

I would recomend doing a cat inlet and outlet temp reading. outlet temp should be at least 100 deg hotter. Your CO is real high at idle. I'm guessing it is a 2 speed idle test because you said "at Idle". It could be just a failed cat or a leaking fuel injector causing a rich condition and causing the cat to fail. Also check for high fuel pres. or a bad fuel pres. reg....Do a fuel pres. test. A bias O2 sensor or bad O2 sensor can cause a rich condition.

Start off with that and let us know.

Just answered your PM.

Just took a second look at those numbers, Have you changed out the O2 sensor or cat too?

The FPR could another thing to check out. Pull the vacuum line and see if there is gas in it. also attach a vacuum pump to it to see if it holds a vacuum. Only go up to 20 in.hg. or you can pop the diaphram.

I JUST barely, passed my smog test over in tacoma. I failed the cruising limit. It was at like 600 ppms for HC. My Idle limit passed. Then they changed some spark plugs and an o2 sensor and it lowered my idle limit from 180 to 89! and Cruising limit from hi #'s down t 139. And I tried this passing smog for dummies **** and it worked. I was pretty skeptical.

I convert the o2 sensor to a 4 wire o2 sensor. But I haven't replace the cat. its still a d15 cat. I replaced dizzy, spark plugs and wires. I haven't checked for vacuum leaks or anything yet but I will try that. thanks guys.

A vacuum leak will cause it to run lean. You are getting too much fuel. Lets figure out if that is the case. Check the fuel pressure. check the fuel pressure regulator. Do an inlet and outlet temp check of your cat.
