Default 36 mpg?!

Edited to fix the title, whoops..

Someone wanna shed some light onto how this could be possible?

I drove to the casino this weekend and then got lost on the way back and wound up driving 231 miles. The route to the casino is heavily policed due to a lot of drunk driving returning from the casino over the years, so I had cruise control set at 50 the entire way there, not a single 5800+ RPM shift the entire trip.

When I got home I refilled, and at 231 miles I put in 6.294 gallons. A quick check on the calc shows... 36.7 mpg?!

My question is basically.. is that even possible? I don't see how I could've screwed up, the odo was set to 0 before the trip because I wanted to see how many miles it was, and that I'm certain of. I just can't beleive that mileage is possible because taking this very same trip in my LX before only netted 31 MPG (my personal best ever in the r18).

Thoughts on this?

nah that seems pretty possible. I've managed an average of 35 on nothing but interstate so yeah....doesn't seem like a far stretch IMO

Yeah that's what I'm saying.. I doubt any minor changes to 07 improved gas mileage like that.

However 27 for you is kinda low, I would expect about 30. I'm just not seeing how 36, almost 37, is even remotely possible.

And now I just feel like a dumbass seeing the thread called "36 mph?!?!"..

Ever hear of hypermiling? There're some guys over on 8th who've claimed upwards of 40mpg in their Sis (although I don't understand the point in owning one then...)

if your driving an Si there is no way you are getting more than the 32mpg rateing. But with a ex or lx with that R18(which is designed for fuel economy) it's totally possible...

I got 33 mpg on my recent drive to Va. All highway. I drove about 75-80mph, If I drove 55 etc I think it would be possible to come out with 35-37mpg.

Well I'm positive more than 32 can be achieved, but I'm still not sure I beleive I got almost 37 mpgs. I just can't imagine what I could've done wrong figuring out the mileage.

@ X, I'm cuious as to what that'll be as well.. I'm gonna assume 99% of the shifts are when the LED is blinking?

Thats on the street. Which is why i dont log or monitor for the little driving my car gets ... I pulled it out Satuday to take down to the NJ shore for some bar action and there was a spider and cobwebs in it

However on the Trip to Florida I'll be monitoring heat issues as well since its a very long drive. And i dont think anyone with a blower has done a journey like this to date.

You might as well just swap cars with me then.. I do have a pretty crazy auger shift boot in it.

I'm making a trip from Denver to Chicago in August. I'm curious for your road trip results with the blower as well. I don't foresee any problems. What will you be using to monitor temps?

My biggest concern is the altitude change. I'm going to **** myself with all the extra horsepower that I'm not used to having

To monitor it... nothing.
I dont have the time or patience to really do anything of that nature I'll be rotating driving with my friend rob who is not used to driving the car, so i'm sure he will be playing around on the highway more then i will lol

The Sea Level issue is pretty null for me since I'm on an island lol
I do understand what your going through when i lived in New Mexico & have family out in Pikes Peak (CO)

I'm just worried moreso about blazing hot julys but again... whatever is whatever.

I'll keep my fingers crossed and bring some KY & a spare Blower belt in the trunk

i just drove to sikeston, MO from memphis, TN sunday and filled up before i left and when all was said and done i had 382 miles before i had to refill. so that is round abouts of 31ish mpg. so i can believe it. because i rode with my a/c on part of the way, and lots of slow down and pick back up. either way congrats

on the SI you can get 37 mpg all highway. i still have the sticker that shows gass mileage from when i bought the car.19-27 in the city. 27-37 highway. The right RPM-speed ratio will get you this. I dont have exact #s but herse an example. If your in 6th gear going 60mph and the rpms are at 3000. If you can go 70 and the rpms only jump up to about 3500 thats 10mph difference and a 500RPM difference. Now say your gong 80 MPH and the rpms are at 4500. from 70mph thats a 1000rpm gain over 10mph. time saved by going that much quicker may account for something, but i dont no. Its hard to explain on a damn computer for me. Basicaly sometimes you go an extra 5 mph and only have the rpms go up 100(yes one hundred) other speeds if you go an extra 5mph your rpms go up 500.

i did my math wrong. it was 382 miles on 10.5 gallons. so round abouts of 36.5 mpg. as for the rpm at speeds... the faster u go, the higher the rpms the less the gas mileage.

MPG will always be one of those constant variables. In my SI I have never gotten above 30, not even close.

Sorry to bump this again, but WHY is this?

It seems like no civic is consistent with another.. Everyone has dramatic changes in gas mileage it seems, and I'm sure we all drive reasonably at SOME point.

I never got above 32 MPG in my LX, and now I'm getting better gas mileage in a brand new SI? I feel like there are factory defects in these cars.. I mean this.. and people running low 14s stock, some have icy cold AC (my old lx) whereas other have 'decently' cold ac (my new si). It's odd, to say the least.

the reason is there are too many variables: average speed, % acceleration, % deceleration, wind direction, temperature, load in the car, ac or no ac, road type (=rolling friction) tire pressure, tire tread pattern, size, ambient humidity (=air density).
