Default Transmission question?

Here is my problem, I have bought 2 Civic Si transmissions that are noisy ( 1 makes horrible growling noise in 1st accelertating and coasting, the other makes a horrible noise in second and third above about 3-4,000 rpms). Now I am sick and tired of swapping these things. And before I make the guy that sold me this junk eat them I want to see my options. I do have 1 DX transmission that made no noise. Here is my proposal I swap the entire gearsets from the DX into the Si case with new bearings. Use the Si final drive. I believe this should work but how hard is this? And 2 can this be done without a shop manual and where can one get one of those manuals with the transmission specs.

i think i know what the problem is with the si tranny that makes the horrible growling noise in 1st. if it sounds like a metallic rubbing sound like grrrrrrr (sorry for my lack of sound effects), then i think the final drive gear on the diff is rubbing the clutch housing portion of the case. i just had the same problem and bought a used Si case and swapped all my gears over. i haven't had a problem yet...*knocks on wood*.

to swap over the gears you should check the differential clearance and the mainshaft clearance. a shop manual will help you out with that. i suggest getting a helms or a honda service manual since the haynes one sucks for the 4th gen models.

When I first put it in it dis it mostly on coast down and whas more of a gear whine. but then it started to do it under hard acceleration in first only. and that was more of the growl you described (well the 2 month old oild din't look so good either when I drained it to swap out the other transmission.) . Well I am going to split the case to see in anycase. I've never had a Honda transmission apart before, but have rebuilt a 4speed Triumph GT6 transmission before a number of years ago. So I know the fundimentals just not the specifics. Maybe I will check with Honda and the libraries to see whats availible to buy or borrow. I know the Haynes has nothing in it and the chlitons is worse than worthless. And haven't been able to find anything else so far. Haven't found a Helms localy yet and never tried Honda yet. But I have a perfectly quiet DX trans, (well it was quiet when I yanked it after the ZC swap because the gears wee way wrong due to the tall final drive and picked up two (worthless) Si Transmissions from a local mechanic that had them, In his cars he said. wonder now if he wasn't deaf or just trying to pawn junk.

split the case and see if the final drive gear is rubbing on the clutch housing portion of the case. the lower diff bearing could be bad and its allowing the diff to move downward and rub the case.

good luck.
