Anyone have parents that are completely against motorcycles? I'm 21 and living at home, my parents say if i get a bike they are kicking me out of the house...and they're not joking.
My dad use to be a fire chief and emt, so he's seen first hand what happens to people in crashes. My mom just goes along with it and uses ignorant stereotypes over and over again, and is sure to point out whenever she reads in the newspaper another motorcyclist dying.
It seems hopeless to argue with them, even buying proper gear and signing up for the msf course, and talking logically, it's just not working. Anyone else have this dilemna?

Almost everyone has been through this. Nothing you can really do except call their bluff. If I were you I'd take the course, and get prepared to buy a bike. Except maybe I'd start off with a dual sport or something, its less intimidating than a sport bike of any size.

my parents were the same way, one day I just went out and bought my bike, my parents didn't talk to me for a few days but now they are pretty cool about it

yeah my dad said no and no and no a hundred times, but then some how HIS dad talked him into letting me get it.

My mom has worked for the AMA for the last 6 years. She encouraged it and helped me find one. My dad is more apprehensive but once he saw it he was overcome by its inherent coolness and made me sit on it to take pictures. They will obviously still worry about me. The problem is they witness all the squids running around (luckily they don't live here in NC) and wonder if I'll be squidly also.
Edit: I'm old enough to do whatever the F I want anyways, but it's better to have approval.

Parents both in medical world both worked ICU and saw biker wrecks and the result of wearing no helmet yeah i heard it ALL but cant control me forever they could either deal with it now and let me find out if its a mistake sooner than later or deal with it later cause either way i will have one tell them that its logic they cant counter
i heard the same thing. "if you buy a bike kevin you can find someplace else to live and pay for school yourself"
I simply called their bluff because I know them all so well and one day came home with a motorcycle
They just did not comment on it. My mom says nothing about it besides be careful and wear a helmet, which I do. If I have the bike out though and I am gone for long periods at a time (5-6 hours plus) she will call to make sure I am ok.
I am 20btw

Lol, I'm glad to hear everyone has gone or is going through the same thing
I am definetely calling their "bluff" and if it's not a bluff my buddy at work offered me a room in his apartment for $250 a month.
The MSF course doesn't start until July and I'm most likely going to be buying a ninja 250/500 very soon, I can't wait

My dad and mom uesd to ride but when it came to me they were koo at first but once my grandma passed away a few years ago my mom was not gonna let me get my bike.
I have had a few friends go down that didn't have gear on just helmet and after seeing them go down i wear my gear 24/7 before i would just wear a helmet. Also i take riding very serious and real cause u can be here one moment and gone the next and i respect the bike 100 percent.
Long story short i have been riding on and off for 7 years and i will be picking up my bike in 3 weeks, So i think if u can come to a reasonable compromise with ur parents they will be all for u getting the bike.

same thing happened to me... even my mom told me that she was going to take it away even if it was under my name. I was like yeah right, that's illegal and she was like you just wait and watch. I moved out and eventually got one after my mom drove my ITR and got it stolen. Then I got the bike for dd... I moved back at home now and she's cool with it. I thought she would never be. Now she tells me all the time not to ride at night... LOLL

i was just talking to my dad, he saw some pictures of my knee pucks and i could hear in his voice that he didn't like it. he was talking about his brother back in the day that went down on his kawi at 120mph and got skin grafts etc etc. "just remember your not invincible..." but that was about it.
make sure when you get your bike, you take your mom for a ride. ride with proper gear and dont be a dumb ***. remember that they can and if you ride long enough will say "i told you so" ride safe!

Ah yes, the "I told you so" lol, definetely going to try and avoid that at all costs.
I'm really excited about riding because with a car and standard transmission, you have more control over it, but with a bike you are one with it. I've always been one to respect and treat well the things I own, it won't be any different with a bike...I can't lie and say it isn't a little scary and intimidating at first, but so was driving a car for the first time.

haha, my parents still don't know that the 250R in the garage is mine

My parents were also against... esp. my mom. She said if I had money to buy a bike, then I could afford to pay rent! I'm an only child and I had no money so I understood it... plus I had a turbo teg.
... until I got my career started.
Then I did it in stages. First, I bought a helmet, then a week later a jacket. She saw them stiiting in my room but since they were just static objects, she got the hint, but didn't get the sense of urgency that the bike is the next logical purchase...
When I got the bike, I didnt explicitly tell mom, until she asked. She was upset for about 5 mins, then got over it.
Over time, I bought full gear. I think that helped a little too.
