Default How to do a metallic paint job?

Hi,

I'm going to be painting my eg soon. I havn't picked the color yet but know I want something along the lines of Java black pearl in either a single stage or dual stage. I've read that you cant wet can't metalics. What is the correct way to spray and finish a job like this? How do you fix orange peel if you get any? Just a side note, if I was to do the DS I would be adding pearl in the clear not metalic base w/ regular clear.

Any Help?

if you are doing it by bc/cc you can sand metallics but its not going to be pretty... at all. thats why ppl say you can't. just take your time and don't spray heavy, try not to get drips.

but what you can sand is the clear coat. to me that is all you should be worried about. AND even then you can correct orange peel after it has dried.

with metallics, try to spray the majority of your car with one go on the same mix. not different pieces on different days. the best of the best have hard time matching the color of the pieces.

yes the pearl goes into the clear. if you are shooting a 2 stage, the base is just going to be base, no clear in that. the clear and base are seperate.

Great, Thank you.

I'm still a little unclear on something. You first say not to sand metalics, yet you later say you can sand the clear w/ the pearl in it. Am I missing something?

Also if there is orange peel on the BC and you then spray clear and then wet sand the clear will it look good or will it still have orange peel?

The majority of the orange peel your going to see are in the clear. Unless I am doing a high quality paint job that I know the customer has the extra cash to blow, I never sand the base. That is unless you happen to get a piece of dirt. I always make a sprayout of the base with the clear and how many coats of each I plan to shoot on the car. Then you can adjust your air pressure and fluid control on the gun.

Unless you spray the base on real thick, you shouldn't have to worry about any BC sanding. Just nib the clear and buff

Thats a vague question that can't be answered accurately. Its not the best idea to have a tinted clear exposed to UV, elements in most average situations, daily driven, ect. You would be better off using the pearl in the base or a clear base, tinted mid coat.

Do not wet sand clear with pearl in it!!!!!!!Your clear with the pearl in it should be an intercoat clear. Basicaly clear basecoat then clear with whatever clear youre using.

Anytime you have color or pearl mixed with a clear you run the most deffinett posibility for hiting color. Then you sand down and repaint.

hmm if this is the first car youre painting, walk across the entire car when shooting the base....this will ensure that the metallic is laid down evenly and you shouldnt get 'tiger stripes' when you do that method.

with the whole sanding the clear with pearl in it....like the guy said above its an intercoat which im assuming should be inbetween the base coat and the last top coat of clear...so basically when youre wetsanding the top top coat of clear, that doesnt have any pearl in it, the layer below it does...but correct me if im wrong.
