Make sure it's on the middle setting.
one side keeps it on, the other side keeps of off, in the middle makes it on when the door is open.

forgive me the only car I've known is a 91 corolla.
So is there an indicator light? In the day time tis hard to tell if my light is on. I mean if I set itin the middle selection, the door might drain the battery plus the light could drain it further!

I really don't understand what more you want.

Set your interior light to the middle position. When you get in/out, the light will illuminate. Make sure you close the bloody door properly and the light goes out.

Easy... no?

There is no door ajar light in the dashboard. Like everyone else said, you have to notice that your dome light is still on.
