I'm trying to put my a6/y8 motor together and what do you know? A damn 10mm bolt snaps when I'm torquing down the waterpump. Took the waterpump off, drilled a pilot hole, and bought a 12$ extractor kit......nothing doin.
Can I take the block to NAPA and have them remove the bolt and rethread a new hole? I'm frustrated as hell, but atleast I have a daily to get around and this is just my project.
My options are limited and the beer is running out
Dammit. I tried to do this exact same swap 2 years ago and the same damn bolt snapped on me. I have THE WORST LUCK in life. ask thenick

Im not sure that they will do it for you but then again ive never asked for something like that. They might who knows. You should just aks them, or take it to a shop and have them do it.
It sounds like you dont have a very good TQ wrench. Ive seen TQ wrenches that are set to 20 ft lbs and are actually tqing at 60 ft lbs. I would say get a good TQ wrench for the rest of the build.

Using a craftsmen torque wrench, but the bolt snapped with my gear wrench prior to even torquing it down. I just worded it wrong originally. It didnt even feel tight, otherwise I wouldnt have kept going. I hope they can do something for me, not sure who else around here can do it.
Usually when you torque bolts to specs they do not break you over torqued it and broke it, understand that if it has a gasket and it's aluminum that pump shouldnt be torqued more that 14 ft lbs. If you were local i would of helped you with your removing the broken piece out of the block good luck and use the torque wrench.

I was using a small ratchet to tighten it up, and I didn't even get to use the torque gun to torque it to 9lbs. I barely put any pressure at all, and then I snapped it. **** happens, but I didn't over torque it.
Any suggestions as far as removing it? I tried drilling a pilot hole and using an extractor kit but that failed. Machine shop? or any other tricks here?

broken bolts really suck!!! take a drill bit that fits in the other holes and drill it the rest of the way out and then re-tap it. just make sure you drill it in the center and straightand dont be stingey with the wd-40 when drilling. it shouldnt be that hard since the motor is out of the car right? a good tap and dye set is worth its weight in gold!!!

Well I dropped the block off to NAPA on tuesday and got it back wednesday. The guy used a heli coil, and said the reason it didn't come out my way was because the hole was a little off center. I must have rushed into it and messed it up. BUT, its all set so back to building it I go! I should be updating my build thread soon.
thanks for the replies turkies!
