Default Chassis Ground - 12v in off 5v in on

like the title says, i have an 88 crx si d16y7, i have 12 volts of chassis ground when the key is off, but when i turn it to the run position it drops to 5 volts, it still has 12volts at the battery when the chassis has 5volts. i cannot figure out if there are any other wires that im missing for ground i have the valve cover ground to the chassis, thermostat ground, and the negative 2 gauge wire that goes to the transmission. is there anymore that im missing? the only thing that has changed since it was working before was i pulled my sohc zc out (bad rings) and dropped in a 55k d16y7, but i stayed obd0 with original transmission from the crx. please help. oh and by the way, all fuses are in good condition, none are blown. thanks.

when you are reading the 5v, what points are you measuring from?

Positive battery terminal to ground?

From the Ground terminal on your battery, it should land on the chassis by the radiator on the passenger side frame rail and from there goto the transmission ground.

yes im measureing it from positive terminal to any bolt on the chassis.

i wasn't aware of the negative terminal to land on the chassis by the radiator, i thought it just went to the transmission, i will have to check that out tomorrow when i get home.

Yeah, the ground wire has what looks to be a mounting bracket that is actually the main chassis battery ground.

look at it in this diagram, its right next to the #14:

so #14 is to the chassis and #17 is to the transmission?
