you'll want something with at least 2.5'' . 3'' is better. less backpressure is good with boost.

If your kit or whatever you use doesnt come with a downpipe, then yes. Usually you buy a downpipe and weld the exhaust to that

 

look into getting a cutout....that way you can use your stock exhaust and still have the free flowing open dp when you need it
