comptech icebox vs AEM CAI
What are your thoughts on the comptech icebox vs AEM CAI? Which one will have more of a gain? I was thinking about getting the icebox over the CAI so I don't have to worry about water getting sucked in..what are your thoughts on this?
Icebox you'll get a better gain, and it's a little more friendly with water intake. If I could do it again I would've bought the Comptech (over the AEM) or made my own.

First, do a search. This has been cover a zillion times along with the whole suckage of water into the filter... but let me clue you in. Whether it's one product or the other, its all a matter of personal preference.

any time you're choosing something of course its 'personal preference,' and telling me to use the search button doesnt do anything. You do a seach I found ONE post about the icebox, no dynos, nothing but one guy who said it "felt stronger." thats why i made this thread.
Save the name calling for another forum. This whole topic has been discussed before, plain and simple. All that I have said in my prior post is what anyone would see if anyone took the time to do a quick search. Besides, if I didn't say it, someone else would have.

I mentioned not having that problem with the icebox as an advantage.

This is like saying apples are apples. Of course when you're picking a product it's personal preference. I want to know if anybody here is using one, and what their thoughts are. I didn't expect this type of unhelpful bullshit, and its quite frankly not typical of the majority of H-T people.
SurferX, thanks for the dyno, I saw that, but I figured its from Comptech.. much like other intake manufactuers often claim a lot more HP than actually gained. I want kind of a consensus as to what people think about the intake- how it performs, etc. thanks for the help though.
one more thing, every car i've seen with this has been an ITR..how would this perform on an LS?

No it's not from Comptech. It was done at the dyno facility Comptech uses hence the logo but both the operator and owner of the car were independant. Comptech did not release that dyno chart, the owner did.
The Icebox is a CAI (cold air intake).
I'll be doing some actual real-world acceleration tests on the AEM, Comptech, and a short ram once HyTech is finished fitting their exhaust with my car.
The problem with testing intakes is that it's hard to reproduce real world driving effects on a standing dyno with the hood open. I have an accelerometer that I will be using to record linear g-force throughout the RPM range. I think that will be a much better comparison than a dyno would. After all our cars do not drive standing on rollers with hood open.
I will be posting all the results on Team Integra but I'll post them up in this forum too if you guys are interested.

both yeild about the same hp, give or take 1-3 hp, which frankly in a car wouldnt make much of a noticable difference. if you like that deep throttle sound at full throtttle, get a cai. the icebox will definately be more quieter.
as for hydrolock, if it rains a lot in your area, just becareful not to drive in a deep puddle and you'll be fine with the cai.
oh yeah, you might want to consider the filter too. i think you'd have to clean the filter more often with a cai
please dont go swearing off in forums man, it isnt worth it, just suck up the comments ppl make

They're all pretty close. Comptech has good gains mid-range, and AEM got higher peak High end gain.
I personally love the look of my red AEM Cai in my engine bay. Matches with the JDM Valve cover, red Battery tie down, and other red things I had in the engine bay.

As far as transient engine response is concerned, from looking at that dyno the Icebox craps all over the AEM. But I'm going to take both of these to the real world with an accelerometer on a track which I think will provide better results.
Real world acceleration is what we should be concerned with, peak power means nothing. I could set the LSA's on my cam gears to get more peak power gains with sacrifice to power in the midrange. In the real world will that make me faster than I was with the LSA's set to give a more broad and complete power curve? Not hardly. Maybe that's why I beat a Vortech supercharged Civic Si who put 210hp to the wheels but could only clock 15.0 ETs. Peak power can lie.
This is why professional race teams use transient engine dynos and track testing for tuning. They would never even think of using a chassis dyno to tune the engines.

very true. the owner of the ITR and who's car was tested on that dyno is here on
H-T...his name on here is Austin. that dyno sheet is the real deal.
that's why i bought my comptech icebox
I don't know of a stock LS that has been dynoed to achieve a base line. Then the same one dynoed with just the icebox and just the CAI for comparation. All of the dyno results I have seen were on slightly modded to highly modded cars. Perhaps someone around here has dynoed their car with what you are looking for but its kinda unlikely.

Here is the dyno curve of a friends car that we just did...bone stock car, then we added in the Icebox and Comptech drop-in filter...make your own conclusions.
