New Fuel Pump Question, Not answered, I did a search. Need answer quick
Basically, my gas tank is a big bucket of rust (it has a hole in it), and my lines are bad also. I figured that on a 16 yr old rex, it might be time to do some preventative maintenance and change the fuel pump also before it dies after the new tank etc. is bolted up...
My question is: Do I need a new sending unit also (or should I get one) when replacing the fuel pump?
I've been told that I do, but I'm not 100% that it's necessary. Some advice please on why I would or wouldn't.
Thanks.

It depends a lot on the condition of the sending unit which is in the tank. If you take it out, it just consists of a little brass piece that rubs against a wire which is wound a bunch of times around an insulation piece. If the brass is worn through, or the wires are worn down to nothing, then it might be a good idea to change it. I just switched a pump out on mine, at 310,000 and I left the sender in the tank.
I'd definitely get a clean tank and a new pump, though.
