Default Shaking when braking hard

The car is starting to shake some from what feels like the front wheels when I brake at higher speeds (50 and higher). The brake pads were changed over a year ago...they are still pretty fresh. Any simple diagnosis here?

Yeah it's just at high speeds, so I don't think it's serious yet...at least I hope not.

tires, check the tire pressure all around and check the tread. i had the same problem and it turned out i only had 20 psi in my rear tires.

Tire pressures are fine. I guess I'll start with getting the wheels balanced, but I figure if balancing is an issue then I'd feel the vibrations all the time and not just while braking.

thats true, one of my wheels was unbalanced and it would vibrate only when i was going 60-80mph

Could be tires. My wifes car was fine until we rotated the tires, then there was a high speed vibration. Took it to the tire place to get a balance and they said no amount of balancing would fix it and her car needed new tires. The tires were 7 years old anyways so it was time.

there could be numerous things. Warped rotors, alot of brake residue on the rotor making its surface uneven, uneven brake pad wear, a really bad alignment, and i guess if you havent done an alignment in a while it would be pretty bad uneven tire wear. even if your brake pads are a year old if you do alot of hard braking there will wear down faster than normal.

I'm gonna hafta side with wheels being unbalanced cuz I just went through the same thing about a month back. Shaking and shimmying at high speeds, at lower speeds not so much if at all. Took it in, got em ballanced and alligned and have had no problems since.

if the pedal is pulsating or the steering wheel shakes ONLY while braking, youve got warped rotors on your hands. Even performance rotors can overheat and warp if youre hard enough on them. And since you can't turn performance rotors, my suggestion would be to take the rotors and pads out and check them for cracks and uneven wear. If they don't look bad, sand them lightly with 180 grit. Make sure the caliper hardware like the anti-rattle clips/slides are clean and lubed lightly with disc brake assembly grease.

This is simple. If it ONLY happends when braking, then its the BRAKES.

Yeah that makes sense, but I'm not sure how they got warped. I autocrossed two years ago with the car, but this problem has just now come up, and I haven't done any hard braking since...can it happen if you just stop hard one time? I also figured the anti-lock brakes would help avoid getting warped rotors as well.

I had that problems before where my steering wheel was shaking so bad it was making me dizzy. does it shake at least a little bit when ur just starting to accelerate too? my old car had that problem and it turned out to be just the ball joint on one of the axles. might wanna check that out.

Is there any reason this would happen all the time. After 5-6 months i always get this shake, and obviously changing my brakes works. But i drove 90% on the freeway in open traffic, hardly ever brake and when i do it is rarely ever hard. Why would this be, i am going to be on 5 sets of brakes soon after less than 3.5 years.

You cannot just even out the rotor because the pads will also probably be uneven (so i have been told)
