jumping idle??

jumping idle??
i'm about to pick up a new car today and the only problem it has right now is that the idle jumps from 1k-1500 when stopped and the battery indicator light is on. The seller told me that the battery is new and that the alternator went out on him within a couple days ago. Do you think that a bad alternator would cause this problem? Or what else would be the cause of that?
