Default Another "o tootsie" thread

Driving to Ocean City Thursday with five V8's (friends) for Hot Rod week in OC...about 5 mins outside OC, I hear a weird noise. Pull over and something sounds like hell. Crank pulley bolt had backed out, stripped out about last 5 threads in the crank.

Key-way on the pulley is Fed, so going to need a new one of those. Im going to try and re-thread the crank, but in the event there's too much damage, looks like I'm pulling the motor this weekend and doing a 2 liter build while the blocks out. I can't win with this car. But at least I have an excuse to bore and stroke it finally

yea man believe me I want to do something with the suspension one day, but I guess while the blocks out I will save myself the hassle later and build it now. I've wanted to hit around 250 whp anyway NA so heres my chance apparently.

On what kind of dyno? Good luck with that goal. Are you planning on throwing a lot of money at this? I hope you're aware of the costs of doing an N/A build with that goal in mind.

Hope everything goes better for you in the future, brutha. IM me if you have any questions as I built my last R to a 2.0L.

hey man been a while since we've talked. I have this set up now...

Portflow P&P head,
ti retainers,
Toda Spec C cams,
Toda cam gears,
Toda valve springs,
CTR .25 pistons,
rc 440 injectors,
fidanza aluminum flywheel,
act hdss clutch,
SMSP 4-2-1 B18C5 Header
SMSP custom 2.5” testpipe
SMSP custom 2.5" ss cat back exhaust
Jenvey ITB’s w/ custom horns
Neptune tuned by Jeff Evans
ARP Head Studs
Outlaw Engineering IM Gasket
Interior:
jdm red stitched shift boot,
s2000 engine start button,
custom mounted vafc below ashtray,
jdm rear upper strut bar
218 whp-146 ft/lbs not to shabby for the build. it made power till 9,000 rpms. upon a re-tune it should make over 220 whp with about 5-8 more ftlbs...i was running a vaccum line wrong and we couldn't/didn't have time to do a proper tune once we figured out what was wrong

I'm thinking a 86x89 build. Looking at maybe Toda D's, but first shipping my head to RLZ to get some more work done on it, maybe some bigger valves, angle valve job, re-port, etc. I hope itll make 250. if not, it will def make some great power until I replace the header and exhaust for more flow.

haha yea the VAFC only has the reading wires connected...all I can really monitor is the rpms and throttle %....jeff unplugged the rest like a year ago when I was running Hondata.

THe previous owner had it customed installed..not I, but it looks hott and girls like it so I left it lol

BTW you do not need bigger valves. I believe it was RLZ or someone else that actually reduced the size of the valves to gain velocity and gained power. And bigger valves on boosted setups with stock cams is one thing, but with such huge cams as the Toda D I can see valve to valve contact with oiversized valves

for my build im saving up for

Spec V Head
+1mm I/E Valves
Full PNP Head
IB PNP IM
Max Bore (tb->im port matched/im->head port matched)
85mm Forged Pistons
Forged Rods
APR Head/Rod Studs
LA Sleeve 85mm(sleeving for safer na or if i want to dab turbo later no hassel.
JDM Header
Test Pipe
J's Racing 60RS Exhaust
BPi Stack and Samco Intake Arm
Chrome Tuned

not going to list all of it but you all get the jsut im really only wanting to hit 230 maybe 235whp

well yea Ill talk to RLZ and simply see what he thinks is necessary for 240-250 in terms of the head. But good call on the cams....I'm just a huge Toda fan, caR's always made great power with the cams. I like to stick with what works. haha

yea good luck man, that looks good for maybe 210 whp....JDM 4-1 header? if so its too restrictive for anything over 200whp really. also, what mm bore on the TB?

i think max bore does 65mm if im correct i might not be. Reason for jdm header is because california is starting to crack down on aftermarket headers and if i keep it looking stock as possible they wont give me a big head ache.

i might have it extrude honed to try and push much hp out of it as possible.

same thing happened to my em1. the bolt started backing out 100 miles into a 500 mile trip home. that was a shitty day.

but sounds like a good build you got going now

yea man its a stout engine now, but if Im tearing the whole thing down, I might as well build it more. I can only imagine how 2 liters is going to feel with the rest of the set up.

damn tootsie!

Dude, don't throw the baby out with the bathwater... see if you can fix the threads. If the crank pulley falls off again, well, worst case you're stranded. Battery will last a while though, I've driven a half hour without a crank pulley when I had one break.

yea i was thinking about that...I was like hmmm can't i at least start her up and drive her 5 mins to a safe place? but the guy told me not to. I could probably just buy a new bolt and put that baby in there because the first 3/4 of the threads are still in tact, all i would need is the bolt, a new key, and pulley....
