Default R18 Oil Leak

Just wondering if any other techs that work at Honda Dealerships have seen any non-Si civics coming in with average mileage and an obvious oil leak which would appear to be a leaking rear main seal, common on higher milage D series motors. I have personally come across 3 where this has been the case. There is a technical service bulletin out regarding this problem and it requires replacing an oil seal plug and crush washer in the rear of the engine block and the rear main seal as a precaution because the transmission has to be removed to access the seal plug. The plug has been the culprit for the oil leaks so far, apparently they were not properly torqued when the engines were being manufactured. I am sure that this problem has been rectified through Honda since the release of the TSB, but I am unsure if VIN serial codes have been identified on the TSB as to which vehicles are possibly affected. I will look up the TSB at work this week and post more information. Just looking out for any dealerships that may or may not want to advise warranty work.

The last 2 times i changed my oil my car had only drained 1 and 1/2 quarts out. Ya sounds crazy, i was 2.5 quarts low both times. I neve seen any leaks on my driveway so i wasnt sure wat was goin on. Im startin to monitor my oil now, I checked it after about 1k mile after my last oil changed, it seemd alittle low but hard to tell with the dipstick. I plan on changin the oil next month, i hope more then 1.5 quarts comes out

well if your car was leaking oil like I have seen due to this problem, the entire bottom of the transmission would be covered in oil, sometimes it leaks so much it even coats the exhaust and subframe mount.

Just let your motor blow then take it to the dealership and get a new one

Not a bad idea, my friend did that with a caddy once, except he drained all the oil out first then let it run. Took about a hour i think before it blew. Then he put the oil back and called the dealer. They put a new motor in it lol, car had about 80k. miles on it, still under warrenty. Dealer said the oil pump went bad or something. lol

Only seen one 06 civic with a leak from the plug behind the trans. Havent seen any of the other plugs in the bulletin leak, but have had many come in with the power steering leak from the inlet pipe.

thanxx for posting man. I thought we had a leak with our R18 but it turns out it was the assembly oil they put on the gasket.

I noticed a small oil leak just a day or two after an oil change, I put it on the lift and it was the Honda filter that was leaking. Had Honda put a new one on, and two days later still leakings from gasket in oil filter. I bought one (a filter) and it seems like the gasket/seal around the top is "iffy". It moves around too much and has too much play. Put an aftermarket filter that had a much better seal, and PRESTO! No more oil leak. Maybe not the same issue, but I'd watch out for that JIC.
