Default Built my fuel sump today..

Well, my friend and I took on a little project and built the sump for my tank. I love to fabricate stuff when I can, but I'm pretty new to it. So, For a first time project like this. I think things came out pretty well. It was simple enough to cut out the pattern and bend it up on his metal break. Then I left the welding to him. A, cause I have no welding experience, as of yet, and B, it was where he works and his fab shop. So, didn't wanna mess anything up. Anyways, He's still pretty new to welding. So, it's not the prettiest sump ever, but I think it came out pretty nice. Plus it'll be all covered up anyways. Here's a few pics from my camera phone..

This is my buddy.

I showed it to my grandfather, and as most of you will probably think and say. The welds aren't the prettiest, but he said the main thing was, the welds are good and everything will seal. So, hopefully the more stuff we fab up and once I get some welding experience. Things will look a little better. Thanks for lookin, tell me what'cha think..

I've been good man. Had a career change that kinda slowed down the car project, but things are pickin up now. the car should be back together in the next week to 10 days..

that was my friends work(Custom Coaches in lebanon). He does interior CAD design(I think) for those big Prevost tour buses. It's a kick *** shop.. They have all the mack daddy welding supplys. Other then metal fab, everything else is done at my shop at home, or at TurboDav's house.

The Tank is finished!

Just got a few things to do to the car and the tank can go back in..

gettin cleaned and preped for the sealant around the sump.

3M sealant around the sump. never can be to cautious!

Let the sealant dry over night and hit the tank up with a new layer of undercoating.

if you added water and let it sit for a couple hours you would see if you had any leaks. it would have almost been more ideal to go over your welds with ur torch only???

I definately agree, I'm just over cautious. The guy who welded it up has be welding for like 30 years. The welds where perfect. I just wanted to be Extra safe.

I hope you didnt use silicone sealant on the welds... acetic acid will rust it very quickly.

3M 5200 is a neutral-curing sealant. Its like Life-Caulk, made for marine environments where dissimilar metals touch a lot. Its good stuff, he made the right choice (maybe used a bit much ).

So whats really the point of the Caulk. I have done a lot of sumps and I have never seen anyone do that. Is there an advantage?
