Honda D15 Powered 1990 Toyota Tercel Help !
Hello everyone,
I've got a quite controversial swap idea that I have already put into play. I have purchased a D16 with plans of powering my 1990 Toyota Tercel with it. My reason for doing this is that Honda's do truly have great quality engines, and great after market support. Now, many will ask why not a B series. I simply cannot afford a b series motor at the moment( Just as a side not I got the D16 for 75$, runs well). If I mount it correctly I could always upgrade. I am not an engineer nor am I a master at mechanics but I am mechanically inclined. I can also weld MIG and stick.I can do the electrical, and the axles shouldn't be a problem. I also have the shift linkage problem taken care of. My problem right now is figuring a way to make mounts. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Here's a pic of the motor in the bay. I still have to level it out but this is how I want it roughly :

I need to figure out how to get a mount on there.

I had a similiar situation, simple solution. Put the mount on the transmission, use a jack or two to position the engine how you want it... use cardboard to mock up two pieces for either side of the mount, drill out design on metal, weld to frame, gusset as needed.

FYI your D16 should tilt back more than what is in your pictures, the valve cover and the top of the intake manifold should be close to level, use a level across the engine to get it level side to side as well. If you don't mount it correctly you are going to have oil flow problems in the head, and consequently could end up doing this all over again.

Great exactly what I needed I have two questions though.
The base plate that's sitting on the transmission in the pictures, where did you get it. Did you shape it your self, send it out or buy it ? Also where can I get a mount like you did the actual cylinder with the bushing. Thanks a lot for the pictures !

Well Jose,
The mount I used was an aftermarket mount meant for that transmission. There is no reason you should not be able to use the original honda mounts (I would!). However if you want to make your own motor mounts.. THIS will help you get the job done.
Best of luck,

I was going to use the original mount but it pushes the engine too far to the right. The mount you made is vertical exactly how I need it thank's for the link !
Did you have to fab any other mounts. If so do you have any pictures. Also was that flux mig ?

Looks like a nice little project.
Whitesol is right on this one. Cardboard is going to be your best friend and a heck of a lot cheaper to mock stuff up instead of having to keep cutting new plates. As far as the vertical mount, you could probably take an old stocker and some square tubing and fab something up fairly quickly.

I would say good old mild steel will be good. Not real sure what size tubing that would be the best though for what you are doing and what space you have. You could probably also weld on small gussets on the mount/tube for some extra strength if needed.

?? Not understanding how you think it pushes the engine too far to the right.. I think some pics are needed. I have fabbed some other mounts before, but I have no other pics sorry. The mount in the picture was welded with fluxcore mig, those pics were before I cleaned up the metal properly.
