Default 97 teg battery question. wtf???

i just bought a brand new battery and replaced it with the dead battery. What happened with the dead battery was it was cranking very weakly to where it would barely start and it never seemed to really get charged again. I am thinking because of this that it is the alternator. The thing that is throwing me off is that I hooked the new battery in the car and it doesnt start. The sound that comes on when you leave the lights on comes on but the lights arent on??????wtf....Ive got electrical power cause the lights and horn, etc work. I still tried to jump start it and nothing cranked. I jump started the old battery though before taking it out and it cranked fine and started right up. Anyone know what is going on?

Loose connections at the starter or battery, and check your grounds.

aight- also i dont have an alarm- but i bough it used and it may have had one in the past- could it be some type of antitheft system? I never had any problems before disconnecting the battery- btw- this is the first time ive ever fully disonnected the battery to put the new one in- the car has never been w/o power. i actually jump started the car right before changing the battery and it started right up- ive never had ay starter problems or problems starting it in the past until i fully disconnected the battery- i am still gonna check all my connections- my friend i just talked to brought what i just typed to my attetion- idk how i am going to get past that system though if thats i the problem

there is a button on the kick panel below the steering wheel. turn car on to the point where you would crank it over then push the button and then start the car it should start right up.
