Default 96 si coupe... blown motor, swap options

hey guys, first post here. just picked up a 96 si coupe (canadian model of course) with a blown motor. 5 sp... im looking into getting some motor options... first off what motor is in the car right now from factory?

and what will easily drop in? ill either replace it with the exact same motor or if possible, i'd like to step up to either the 160hp 1.6 or perhaps the 1.8 base or GSR. all depends on which will drop right in with little to no mods

i tried reading through a bunch of threads but my lack of knowledge relating to specific engine codes is leaving me a lil confused. any help is appreciated

ive gone through that thread... i cant really make heads or tails out of it. let me be more specific...

what is the engine code for my stock motor?

and will a b18b from a 98 integra drop in... mate up to the tranny and accept all the stock sensors? and plug up to all electrical?

if not, what mods are necessary?

you have a b16 man.. A b18b will not be a straight drop in. you'll need diff. cv axles, etc... It's a good affordable swap to pick though!

Incorrect... a Canadian SI = US EX, so he's got a D16, not a B16.

A B18 of any flavor will be a straight drop-in, considering that the mounting points are the same and you have the right OEM mounts. If you mean in terms of reusing everything you already have, then no, not a straight drop in. But considering that you're changing the powertrain, it's never that easy.

any b series will drop straight in provided you use the b series mounts, linkage, and axles. b18c1 or bust.

So much wrong in this post.

Just to make it incredibly clear again.

EJ8
US - EX
Canadian - Si

EM1
US - Si
Canadian - SiR

Christ on a crutch

He's dot the equivalent of our Ex for christ's sake.

IT'S A D16!!!!!!

B-series swaps all drop in fine with the appropriate mounts provided it's a hydro swap.

To the OP
1) What's your budget?
2) Is this a daily driver? Or a project car? Or both?
3) Will it be tracked?
4) How mechanically inclined are you?

Christ the misinformation in here is astounding!!!

ok guys thanks, now we're getting some where

the sixth digit in my vin is an "8" so i believe i have the d16z6... correct?

i have $5K Canadian set aside for the swap... doesnt mean i want to spend that much though. i am mechanically inclined as my father is a mechanic and we have both a 4 point hoist and a 10 gallon compressor in the garage. pulling the motor and dropping in a new one is a simple matter... i just dont want to be surprised by any specialized wiring or sourcing of random small bits. if everything needed is off the shelf and readily available i'd like to know exactly what i need and have it ordered beforehand... i simply need the guidance to know EXACTLY what i need for a specific motor

this car was just purchased and is not intended for use for atleast a few months... it will be daily driven and will NOT be tracked. i simply want something fun for the street.

what is a hydro swap?

No, you have a D16Y8. The generation prior to yours had D16Z6's. They are, for all intensive purposes, the OBD1 equivalent of your motor.

If you're dad is an experienced mechanic for imports I'd say just do any b swap you want, or do an h2b.

h2b will be loads of Daily driving fun. I was dead set on getting a gsr motor for the past year, but now after driving an h2b in an eg I really want to do that instead. And ti can be done for the same price.

Still haven't dont jack to my car, but I'm about halfway to it in my savings.

ok so ive got the d16y8 motor... now which motor will be easiest to swap in and require no splicing/wiring? the 160hp SIR motor? the 170hp GSR or the type R?

im even contemplating the 140hp non vtec motor out of the base integra... i believe itd make for good around town power

oh... and once again i understand that ANY one of these motors will work... i need to know EXACTLY what is needed for them to work though... for all i know the type R will drop right in using the stock mounts... the axles will bolt up and all... while the SIR motor will require a new ECU, wiring and custom engine mounts. i need to know specifics for each motor

It's all going to require wiring. If you want something that will literally just DROP in, just buy another Y8.

If you're not comfortable doing a swap, then pay someone.

As for the base integra motor (B18B1), I have one in my hatch. Good daily driver motor. Good low end, good gas mileage. I perform regular maintenance, it runs like a top, and I get 32mpg.

Yep, any motor will require some basic wiring, but none of it is overply complex for anyone with basic wiring skills.

The hardest wiring job I could think of is wiring a b16vtec head onto a b18b block. And even that's not hard for anyone with confidence.

The wiring is pretty self explanatory on any basic swap into a civic. And no matter what some wiring will be required.

Grow some nuts, take on a challenge and quit worrying about wiring/etc. I can't believe how reluctant I was to do my own swap labor after I helped a friend do his LS swap in his EK. Both of us were first timers, we never ran into any issues with out handy helms. We didn't even use it that much.

ok thanks again eran... looks like ill simply stick with the y8 then... i dont want to be messing around with the wiring. only if i had a "step by step" tutorial of the wiring would i attempt it

ive also edited my last post. thanks again

EDIT: ok seems like i cant post any more msgs... so ill simply edit this one to reply. so are there any detailed "step by step" wiring tutorials for any of the above mentioned motors (longblocks) to swap in place of the y8? if so a quick link would be appreciated. i wouldnt know where to begin with the wiring... will the stock y8 ecu work with all of these motors?

Don't let a little wiring discourage you from a swap. If you have any kind of soldering experience and a helms you can wire up a swap in half an hour.

Or you can buy complete hybrid harnesses for $75 from a h-t sponsor.

EDIT: Damn that's the 2nd time I've used that phrase in one thread.
